Ruby woke her the next morning with a big cup of coffee. Lily blurrily opened her eyes and squinted at the clock. It was 7.10am. Lily groaned as Ruby opened the bedroom curtains and then got in beside Lily in the bed.
“What’s your plan today?” Ruby asked brightly. Lily took a moment to ponder on just how perky Ruby was when she knew for a fact that Ruby wouldn’t have been home until after 2am. Ruby never seemed to need as much sleep as Lily and when Lily complained, Ruby said all she needs to survive is coffee or that sleep was for wimps.
Lily sighed and took a sip of her coffee, thinking about her day ahead whilst looking around her bedroom. It was so small it didn’t take long. The walls were painted a nice pinkish white, so pale it just added a warm glow to the room. The matching curtains and bedding were white with little pink poppy’s. To her left was an old fireplace that took up a lot of valuable space. But the ornate carvings were so pretty she had fallen in love with it as soon as she had seen it. On top of the fireplace in pride of place was a beautiful picture of their 2 mums, hugging each other with great big grins. On either side of that she stacked her shoes in their shoeboxes. On the opposite wall was her wardrobe, it was a horrible second hand wardrobe that she had tried to brighten by painting white and then completely covering all the surface area with pictures that she had blue-tacked.
“I think I might just hang out today, do some painting, have a look online see if I can find any more jobs, maybe go for a run to the park again.”
“Is that a good idea? I was thinking about what you said last night, and personally I think you should listen to your instincts, and if they are telling you that this guy is a stalker, you should listen.”
She shrugged. “It’s unlikely he is. But if I see him I’ll be careful.” She smiled at Ruby. “What’s your plan for today?”
“Well I have work in the bookstore this morning at 10.” Ruby worked 4 days a week in a book store in town; a job she loved because of the discount, and at quiet times she was allowed to read (as long as she didn’t damage the merchandise). “And then I thought I might let Sol take me out.”
Lily laughed. “I was going to put a good word in for him; seems I don’t have to now. He just let me in to Sean’s last night no questions asked… and he has all those muscles.”
“Yea, his muscles sure are pretty, shame there isn’t much behind the ears. But he will do for the movies.” She said with a grin.
The girls chatted amiably about nothing for a while, then Ruby had a shower, and Lily made them both pancakes with blueberries and cream, to set them up for the day. It was a pleasant morning like lots of others before.
After spending the day painting, at about 4pm she couldn’t take being inside any longer, and decided to go for her run. Before leaving, Lily spent a long time getting ready. She layered her make up carefully for the natural look, then she put her hair up in a flattering high ponytail. Rather than her usual baggy joggers and sweat shirt, she put on her yoga pants, and a tight sweater that she took out of Rubys wardrobe. It was a little tight but she squeezed in.
Satisfied that she looked as good as she was going to while running, she set off on her normal route. Anticipating and eager again, she listened to the latest M83 album, completely in the zone. After a while of doing laps around the park she realised he wasn’t there, and wasn’t coming. Disappointed, but telling herself she should be relieved, she headed home, berating herself.
It wasn’t until she was putting the key in the lock that she smelt the lemons again.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” he hissed from right behind her.
