Several hours later Lily closed the door of the apartment that she and Ruby have lived in for the past 4 years. She sank back against it with a sigh. She had thought the day couldn’t have gotten any worse from the crazy guy (guys) in the station that morning, but it had just gone downhill from there.
“That you?” Ruby called from the kitchen, from the smell of the tiny apartment, she was obviously making herself a coffee.
“Yea, it’s me.” Lily said as heave herself away from the door with a sigh, feeling twice the age of her young 24. She hung her wet coat over the radiator to dry, and dumped her bag in the cupboard before heading towards her best friend and adoptive sister.
Lily had moved to live with Ruby at the age of 7 when her mother had been killed in a car crash. Not knowing who her father was and with no other family alive, Rubys mum, who had been Lilys mums best friend since childhood, had taken Lily with no questions asked.
When Lily had first moved in with them, Ruby (at age 6, a year younger than Lily) had not liked this crying girl coming and taking all the attention away from her. Also she now had to share her room! The two were completely different in personality as they were in looks. Ruby was (and still is) tiny, with long red haired; she has a quick temper and fierce, sometimes even a bit aggressive compared to Lilys introverted, and placid personality. Lily looked delicate with her pale skin, mass of crazy brown curly hair and blue eyes. Ruby’s mum used to call them fire and water.
But it didn’t take long for the pair to become best friends, bonding in their joint hatred of their big brother Max who was a year older than Lily, and at that age, a terrible bully. He was a typical boisterous 8 year old and they were girls! When Lily first moved in, he was always wrecking their games and causing fights, although not so much when he became interested in girls, and taking advantage of having sisters with attractive friends.
They lived like a average family for a while growing up, worrying about school, and friends and who said what to who, and who was wearing what to where. But that all changed a few years later when Ruby and Maxs mum died in a mugging that had gone terribly wrong.
With her gone it left them with Rick, their step father. Rick had at one time been a good man, but after his wife’s death he couldn’t cope with 3 teenagers and bills to pay so he started drinking, and when he drank, he got nasty and would blame the kids for his problems and lash out and hit them. Although Max took the brunt of it protecting the girls as best he could, they all suffered through those dark years.
When Max was 18 and big enough to defend them, he finally stood up to Rick and kicked him out of the house. This was difficult as they were all teenagers; Lily 17 and Ruby 16, they had to find the money to survive but without going to the authorities as they didn’t want to take the risk that they would be separated from Max and sent to a foster home.
Not long after Rick left, things got even worse when Lily got really ill and needed a hospital, Max in a state of desperation turned to crime, and started stealing cars. He discovered he was quite good at it, and it paid well so things were relatively good for a little while.
But as always this didn’t last long, and 2 years later he was arrested for GTA and sent to prison. Still protecting them when in prison, he refused to let the girls visit him. But they received a call a few months later from the police saying that there was a fight and someone had died. In the events after the fight, he had managed to escape by hurting a few prison guards. If they heard anything they were to contact them immediately, or they too could go to prison. He never did contact them but every few months they would receive a couple of hundred dollars in the post. They figured it was him looking after them still.
