Varian thought he knew what to do.
The plan was to tell - well, more like ask - his father about leaving.
Can you guess what the answer was?
...yeah, it was no.
Quirin was always a protective dad, many would say overprotective, but that was because he didn't want to lose his only child.
But Varian was his own man now, and he felt he had to go on this journey. If not for himself, then for his mother.
And that's were we are now, Varian and his father arguing in their living room.
"Dad, please. I'm not a kid anymore, I know I can do this" The alchemist pleaded, his mom's journal still firmly in his hands.
"For the last time Varian, no! I lost your mother to those trials, I won't lose you too" Quirin shot back.
Varian looked down at the old book in his hands for a few seconds, then looked back at his father, tears stinging his eyes.
"What if she's still out there? What if she's just stuck somewhere? I might find her if I go"
Quirin sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose before looking at his son again, " Will you stay safe?" he asked.
Varian nodded, "I will"
His father turned to leave, but stopped and turned to Varian, "Make sure to tell everyone your leaving, they'd get worried if you just suddenly stopped showing up"
The alchemist nodded again and his father left the house.
(Timeskip because you get the point)
Varian was looking at the landscape beyond Old Corona, searching for the easiest path to take, Ruddiger on his shoulder, when he heard many footsteps behind him.
He turned to see his friends from the kingdom. "So...why are we all here?" Eugene asked.
Varian has already had a backpack full of things he needed ; Food, a tent, some money, and some alchemy equipment because you never know when you need alchemy. That and Varian knew it was essential for the trials.
The alchemist shifted awkwardly, he may be eighteen now but at times he still felt like a little kid, "Right, um...I'm going to finish my mom's work. I'll be away for quite a while and I didn't want you guys to worry"
It was quiet for a moment, then Rapunzel walked up to him and pulled him into a hug, "Thank you for telling us Varian, I'm sure your mom would be proud"
He smiled and the queen pulled out of the hug. Eugene walked over and, lightly, punched Varian in the shoulder. "I'm happy for you, Hairstripe. Remember, no matter where you are, you'll always be part of Team Awesome"
The alchemists smile widened slightly as he rubbed the spot Eugene punched. "Thank you, Eugene, for everything" he replied.
One by one, everyone wished him luck. After he had spoken to everyone, Varian saw his father and rushed over to hug him, "Thank you for letting me do this" he said.
"Of course," Quirin pulled out of the hug slightly, "but please stay safe"
"I will, don't worry"
His father smile slightly, "I'm also gifting you something to help you on your travels" he said, gesturing to the donkey in a nearby field.
"Oh...wow, Prometheus? You really didn't have to, dad" Varian said awkwardly, with the donkey the journey would probably take alot longer.
"Take good care of him, because I know he'll take good care of you" Quirin stated, putting a had on his son's shoulder.
"We'll, thank you," he said, looking up at his father before turning to the crowd of people, "Thank all of you, I couldn't be were I am today without you. I'll be back before you know it"
Quirin had gone to get Prometheus. The donkey already had a saddle and bridle on. Varian got on and set off, a chorus of 'goodbye's and 'good luck's behind him.
"Okay, mom wrote about the Fire Kingdom first," He said to Ruddiger, skimming through his mother's journal, "So that's were we'll go first"
