Rafe and Vivienne have been best friends for 12 years, they come from a long line of snickers, biking, late night car rides, sneaking out, climbing trees, lighthouses, building forts, judging people, promise rings and alot more stuff.
They've been friends ever since they were six years old, so they basically grew up together, every single thing that happens in their life, small or big -- they tell each other, even the most stupidest stuff, puberty, first kisses, embarrassing secrets, darkest secrets, and first sexual encounter . They basically went through different stages of their life with each other; elementary school, middle school, and highschool, they've seen every single side of each other so they were comfortable with one another, showing and telling each other their side that they don't show to anyone else, expressing themselves with each other freely without the fear of being judged - they were one anothers, other half, they could never live without each other, they aren't Rafe Cameron or Vivienne Lenoir without each other.

Their friendship circles around gift giving - not expensive stuff, they could give each other a piece of paper, as long as it has a deep meaning, they will cherish it forever.

They were both polar opposites.

Kathryn was a feminist, deep and complex person, open-minded, and she was a huge philosopher; Constantly quotes random authors or dead people 24/7, sees the beauty in the smallest things, a huge thrifter, a huge fan of coming of age movies, always gives beautiful meanings to even the most ridiculous crap, and every single thing she owns is important, or is meaningful to her, she doesn't have any item that she just bought for no reason, each of it has a meaning, her piano, typewriters, journals, paintings, jewelries, record players, pillowcases, - even her car has it's own personality and name.
She just didn't like the idea of buying stuff that are just empty pieces and doesn't have any history, or doesn't symbolize something.

Rafe acts like he finds it annoying, but he loved that side of her, he cherishes it, he loved it when she gets so passionate about talking about the meaning of a star, or a rock.

But what he truly loved about her was her courageous and adventurous side, about how she was always up for anything. Every single day, she was always looking for something new, something exciting, something thrilling. She never loved wasting her day doing nothing when there's a big world out there where you can do anything - the possibilities are endless.

Everyday she was always looking for an adventure.

She always had a saying: "Never say no to new experiences."
No matter how scared shitless she was about doing something new, she just forces herself to swallow her fear, cause she knows at the end of the day; it's gonna be worth it, and that in a few years from now, when she's old and boring and can barely even walk, she's gonna look back at it and have no regrets, she didn't waste her time; she lived her life to the fullest.

And then Rafe was this snobby, tough, rich, dickhead, -- the king of the kooks. The type of guy to beat up people for insulting his ego. Basically a guy that Kathryn Cartridge would deeply despise, but he was her best friend, and she couldn't help but love him no matter what he does.
But his tough act didn't stay on whenever he was with the girl.  He just turns into a completely different person when she's around. The side of him that he doesn't show to anyone else, the side of him that he likes. He just drops his tough, snob, kook guy act, and just be his true self around her, when he's alone with her, it's like weight was lifted off of his shoulders, he was comfortable with fully expressing himself around her without the fear of being judged, - Besides, she's seen every side of him, embarrassing, bad, or good, and she still loves him and doesnt treat him any different.

And pretends to not enjoy it when she turns him into a person that was so far from what other people see him as. But he always had that personality in him, she just brings it out; a person who sings loudly to Taylor swift, bingewatches sitcoms, gives corny ass jokes, reads books, is interested in playing piano, and just overall a soft guy, - but he loved it, that side of him, it was his favourite part of the day, when they're both alone in each others room and just hanging out, even if they weren't talking (which they do.) He'd still enjoy it as long as they were both in each other's presence.

Two completely different people with different issues slowly realize that the thing that they had been looking for their entire life was right infront of them the whole time.

But it was all too late when they finally did realize that.
