It was around midnight and I sat by my window staring out the glossy surface at the silent city known as Myrtle Beach. I know the amazing hotspot vacation location on the whole east coast! It should be amazing and fun and just well the best time you have ever had. It wasn't like that for me. I traced the sharpie lines on the notepad which sat in my lap. The inky designs swirled in every which direction until plummeting off the end of the paper, gone. It was a beautiful drawing of an island. It had a ocean that glistened in the bright sunlight. A lush forest that danced in the wind. Beautiful rock cliffs that dangled in the air above the water. I had drawn many pictures similar to this, it was just something that came to me. Of course I never knew the place I was drawing, I just always believed that if I could draw a magnificent place then I could do what a cartoon character would do and go in through the paper. I had believed that I could escape this town.
Even though I had thought of escaping into a magical place where I could throw away my troubles and pain, I knew that I had to keep trying harder. I had to try harder to let this fantasy go, but the more I try, the more it fills my head. I have been a Disney movie junkie ever since a little girl, I still am. I had loved watching how happy endings came to those who deserved them. I loved how many broken hearts were filled with love. I loved how the characters had a loving family and friends around them. The Disney movies had described me perfectly, just the opposite of me. I had been abandoned by my parents when I was young, not young enough to not support myself though. I can still remember their faces on my thirteenth birthday when they left me. I had told them all these stories of a wonderful place where you never age and can have the most fun you wanted.
Well you see my parents were very poor. They were stressed out about their jobs and money situations. In the big town of Myrtle Beach you should be able to find lots of opportunities, but they didn't. Times became hard for us. Stress levels rose more and more every day. I had always tried to cheer them up and tell them about this magical place that had been in my mind. I tried to convince them of coming with me someday. I guess when my thirteenth birthday came around, they couldn't handle it anymore. I remember that they had left the house for hours at times, searching for someone. They said their troubles would be fixed if they found him. I never knew who this him was. They only said he had the power to help us. I at the time had believed in them.
Well I know how that turned out for me now. They just left me. Just 'poof' gone. The only thing I remember was a portal in the swimming pool at the hotel we had been staying at. My parents had jumped through, not caring about leaving me behind. I had ran after them to jump in, but when I did the portal closed and I just splashed into the cold water of the swimming pool. I sighed and looked out the window once more before closing my sketchpad and moving over to my bed. I got under the covers and took a sip of water before letting my eyelids close. "I want to believe that my parents will come back for me, but I believe more of the island. I believe in you." I thought before I fell asleep.
I woke up to a loud crash and jumped up with a start at the sound as the walls shook slightly. Another loud boom filled the air and I sighed with relief, it was only thunder. I stood from the bed and hurried over to the window as drops of water pounded into the window. Wait was this a thunderstorm? The wind was blowing fiercely and trash cans scraped against the road as they flew from the force. Not an ounce of sunlight was seen. Was this a hurricane? My eyes widened as something hurled at the window I stood behind. I screamed and dropped to the floor.
The window smashed as the object landed on my bed. Now rain poured into the room and dirt flew around from outside. I slowly stood up and ran to the closet. I noticed my arms and hands were cut from the glass, but nothing I couldn't handle. I grabbed a coat and slipped my feet into the only pair of boots I owned. I then ran from the closet, the winds howled as they flew against my house. I looked on my bed and noticed my very own skateboard I had left outside was what flew through my window and almost killed me. I grabbed the board and ran out of my room.
I ran all the way through the small house I had been able to pay for with three jobs. I made it outside and started to try to skate to an emergency shelter. Since I didn't have any internet or a TV I didn't know a major tropical storm was coming! I had to get to the nearest shelter and fast, which would be very hard to do. It was early morning and when I say early morning I mean early morning. It was still dark out! Most of the power was out which meant the streetlights weren't working. I skated down the road dodging any lawn decorations that came my way. I had gotten half way to the shelter when a strong gust of wind sent me flying off my board and into a nearby building.
I groaned in pain and moved onto my knees, trying to keep my eyes open from all the wind, water, and whatever sand and sediment that was mixed with it. Just as I was about to stand I saw through my scattered vision a car tumbling straight at me. I screamed, knowing I had no time to dodge such a big object. Just as I screamed something tight wrapped around my wrist and yanked me high in the air. I watched in utter fear as the car smashed through the building, making a huge hole in the wall. I gulped, that would have been me. I would have died.
I also noticed that I was going further and further away from the ground. My eyes widened and I looked at what gripped my wrist so firmly. What I saw was amazing. It was the shadow I had always dreamt about. It looked the exact same as in my dreams. It had a tall lanky figure and glowing eyes. It looked at me before it flew at unimaginable speeds. I gasped in shock and looked around at the blurred town that we flew over. Next thing I know the shadow darts down, so fast that I feel my body jerk at the force of the turn. I wince, but the pain leaves as quickly as it came. I look around again and notice we aren't in Myrtle Beach anymore. The shadow hovers over a golden sandy beach. I look up at it and smile, thanking it mentally. It lets go of my hand and I yelp as I fall straight in the crashing waves.
The water throws me around for a few seconds before I find myself on the shore. Once I regained my breath I spun to glare at the shadow only to find that it flew away. I huffed and looked around. Where am I exactly? My eyes land on the lush green forest, the rocky cliffs, the sparkling ocean. Then everything clicks…I'm in Neverland.
