EDITED
Ella Chase. That's me. 26 years old, and still living with my stepmother and her two wretched daughters, on the porch of my late father's penthouse. My job, is serving my stepmother and stepsisters, unfortunately. My best friend, Makayla, has the easier job. She is an apprentice seamstress for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Why couldn't I have that job?! Anyway, my parents used to be the cutest couple ever but my mother was diagnosed with cancer and quickly passed away. My father was heartbroken so he hung around a lot of shitty bars.
That's how he met my stepmother. He eventually came home after eloping in Vegas with her. I had never even met her, and suddenly she was my stepmother. Her and her two annoying and bitchy daughters moved in with us, and I had no say in any of it. I was still kind to them though, and even more so, after my father was killed in a car accident. They felt like my only family; my last piece of my father, so I took care of them, and that eventually ended up turning into a full time thing. Tons of cleaning, cooking, shopping, and other meaningless tasks were thrown at me.
I have still kept up with it, leaving college in the process. I also work for the postal company to pay for groceries and myself. My stepmother, Rebecca, only pays for things for her and her daughters. She could care less about me and for some reason, I still stay. Makayla always wondered why I stuck around, but I never had a good reason.
Today, my tasks were multiplied. The list left for me as the girls went to school, and Rebecca went to the salon, consisted of these tasks:
1) Clean ALL windows
2) Clean my room
3) Clean Belle and Lindsey's bathroom
4) Order pizza for tonight's dinner
5) Organize dresses for the ball on Friday
6) Schedule me a massage for Wednesday at noon
7) Book the bar for Belle and Lindsey's 21st birthday on Saturday
8) Fix the TV
9) Go out and buy groceries for the week
10) Get rid of those boxes from storage (they're taking up too much space)I sighed and folded the list before sliding it into my pocket. Then I grabbed my cleaning cart from my bedroom/ the balcony porch thing, before starting on my tasks. I made hundreds of calls, got the groceries, found dresses that would look good on the girls, cleaned mostly everything in the penthouse, fixed anything that needed fixing, then went to throw out the boxes. I opened one of the boxes and saw my father's journals. He was a writer, a poet, more specifically. I couldn't throw them away, so I just brought them into my room where the rest of my parents' stuff was.
Afterwards, I walked to the post office for work. That's actually how I met Makayla. The Penguins always order a bunch of new stuff, so I'm basically there everyday. I put on my uniform quickly, and grabbed the packages and letters for the route I run. Like always, there is hardly anything, since everyone has recently turned to email, instead of sending a normal letter. I walked into the PPG Paints Arena and waited for Makayla. She came running over to me, hugged me, and asked, "How are you holding up with those wicked witches?"
I just sighed and said, "Still rough, but Kay, they really aren't that bad" She raised her brows and said, "Hun, we both know that's a load of bull shit" I just chuckled and shook my head, holding out the clipboard for her to sign. She signed, took the package, and then said, "You know what? We need to find you your prince charming, who will sweep you away from that evil" I looked at her seriously and said, "Yea, right. There's no such thing as 'prince charming', fairy godmothers, miracles, or wishes on shooting stars. This is reality I'm living, not some stupid fairytale"
She sighed and said, "Damn you Cinderella" I chuckled and said, "Bye Kay" She waved goodbye saying, "Goodbye my princess" I laughed and shook my head as I walked out, and on to my next delivery. Once I finished for the day, I hung up my uniform and brought the pizza home. I picked up a Subway sandwich for myself, and walked home. Once I got home, I left the pizza on the table, greeted the hungry beasts, and walked into my room to eat, and then sleep. I woke up to my alarm the next morning, and followed through with the task list, which had recently been getting longer. But this time at work, when I went to see Makayla, she had a shit eating grin plastered on her face.
In that moment, I feared for myself. As she signed the clipboard she said, "I have a surprise for you" I looked at her questioningly and she said, "So since I work for the Pens, I get a free ticket to the season ticket holder ball, but what I figured out is that it's a +1 invitation. Therefore, I've come to the obvious decision, that I'm taking you to the ball" My jaw dropped instantly, and I shook my head vigorously. She gave me her best puppy dog face and said, "Pleaseee? I need you to come with me" I continued to shake my head as I said, "Not unless you want me to get kicked out of the house!" She laughed and said, "That's exactly what I'm hoping to happen!"
I furrowed my brows and said, "But I don't want to. They're the last piece of family, that I have" She shook it off and said, "Pleaseeee? you only have to dance with me once" I then crossed my arms and said, "What if Rebecca catches me? Her daughters and her are obviously going" Then Makayla grinned and said, "That's why we wear masks" I shook my head again and so she finally decided she would get on her knees and beg. She pleaded, "Pleaseeee Ella? Pretty, pretty please, with Sidney Crosby on top?" Crap. She got my weak spot. Well she is my best friend. I'd be worried if she didn't know it.
I sighed and she knew she had won. Just then one of the players, Marc-Andre Fleury, came over and said, "Did she say yes Kay?" Makayla nodded and they high-fived. I have met Flower a few times because he always likes to meet new people and make friends. I chuckled and Makayla said, "You got her dress right?" He nodded and my eyes widened. I quickly said, "You did not buy me a dress" They nodded and Makayla added, "I'm going to alter it a bit, but yes we did. I also made your mask already" I raised my eyebrows and said, "You knew I was going to say yes?" She grinned and said, "What can I say, I'm very persuasive" Fleury nodded and said, "Me too" then we all started laughing and I left to finish my delivery route.
