01|| These Four Walls

Absolute silence stretched beyond the four walls in which my bedroom was contained and spreaded like wildfire encasing the small apartment in a sleepy hollow. Normally the sound of my little sister's light snoring or the air conditioning unit was enough to lull me back into a false sense of security and eventually sleep would consume me.

However, something was off- no sound could be heard besides the rapid breaths that I was taking in order to keep myself calm. At that moment my dog, a male pit bull named Hoax made his presence known. I purchased him a couple months ago as a puppy to scare away intruders that might try to invade the personal boundaries of my home.

Without even thinking, I pull my body forward into a sitting position before rubbing my eyes using the palm of my hand. It was then that I decided that I would go check on my sister- I was never able to sleep through the night without making sure she was in one piece. Although I'm not sure of my reasoning for doing so, but it gave me a vital piece of mind knowing that she was out of harm's way instead of out on the gang dominated streets of New York.

Using the lamp on my bedside table to naviagate my way across my bedroom, I make my way into the hall. From there I carefully swing open the door- trying my best not to emitt various sounds to wake her up- to my little sister, Reign's bedroom. It takes me all of five seconds to realize that she was not laying in her bed like she was suppose to be. I flick on her bedroom light just to double check, and sure enough the proximity in which her body normally lays peacefully was vacant.

Reign, my only living relative was predictable to say in the very least. It didn't take me very long to pinpoint her location, and track her down. The last couple of months or so she had been off putting and acting strange; it wasn't until the previous week until I was able to put together.

Like most teenager girls, she had been effected by the charm of a man that she swore swept her off of her feet every time they were together. Consequently, the man she fell for happened to be Lucus Gage, the leader of the notrious gang known as The Shadows.

However, I knew better. Gage didn't love my sister and he never would. He was the kind of man who only held a couple of things close to his heart, such as power and money. Gage managed to fool me once, but he wouldn't get over on me again.

Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me.

As Reign's older sister, I feel an overwhelming need to protect her from any and all harm that may come her way. She was merely sixteen years old, not nearly mature enough to handle the emotional toll of being with someone as complex as Lucus was. I had some experience with gangs, more than most, but I had learned from my mistakes and was avidly trying to make sure that Reign didn't do the same.

Of course Reign would decide that she wanted to be with one of the only people that I couldn't protect her from. She was currently making my job a hell of a lot more diffcult than it ever needed to be. I was hoping that because of our past experiences that Reign would cut me some slack and the largest problem that I would have was making sure she didn't lose her virginity to some stoner and coming up with enough money to buy her a decent dress to showcase at prom.

There was no telling how long ago Reign snuck out of the house without my knowledge. Hopefully it wasn't too long ago; I had to make up the time that I had lost in the a small time frame. I knew my sister and she wasn't one to sneak off in the middle of the night. This alarmed me greatly because the only reasoning I could deduce was Lucus. Reign never acted as wreckless as she was now. It was terrifying for me to witness this drastic change in such a small time frame.
