Children of all age groups swarmed into the Great Hall, most splitting off into their friend groups immediately.
There were large gaps between each group on the Slytherin table, they kept their secrets to themselves and never told anyone outside their bubble.
The Ravenclaws whispered to each other, talking shit about everyone they could, not caring if anyone overheard.
The Hufflepuffs sat and talked in their separate groups but not distancing themselves like the Slytherins, they just occasionally talked about the latest couples or just drama in general.
The Gryffindors all sat together and just talked, the vast majority of their conversations were spent bitching about the Slytherins and their pureblood values but for the rest of the time they just talked about anything they could.
They only stopped their chatting whenever a child joined their house but that only happened one day of the year.
Regulus sat surrounded by sweaty, disgusting and untidy Slytherins - it was a situation he often found himself in though he it was a also a situation he was deeply uncomfortable with.
They all sat there talking, food spraying from their mouths.
Disgusting.
Regulus thought to himself, picking at his food.
"Honestly did you see that Hufflepuff girl? Jesus Christ the size of her!" Mulciber joked, spooning mashed potato onto his plate.
"You can't say much mate, look at the size of you." Barty replied, earning a laugh from the table.
"You shouldn't body shame people, it's not a particularly good trait to have." Regulus added, still picking at his small portion.
"Yeah don't talk about food in front of Reggie! He might have a panic attack just thinking about it, the shit he doesn't eat."
It was true, Regulus rarely ever ate. If he did it was most likely because his parents or Barty had forced him to.
"Honestly Black, try actually eating for once and it might toughen you up a bit." One of the Carrow twins said, nudging Regulus' arm.
"Yes well, my sincerest apologies for not prioritizing food as much as you do." He said rather heatedly.
Carrow put his hands up in surrender and went back to eating.

The Marauders all sat together, occasionally chatting to the people around them, eating their food in a rather rude and hungry manner, except Remus of course. He had some form of dignity compared to the vast majority of his friends.
The food at the start of term feast was magnificent, it seemed that they had a bit of everything.
They had burgers, beef, noodles, spaghetti, roast potatoes, carrots and all other assortments.
It was safe to say that no-one would be going hungry anytime soon at Hogwarts. Sirius was resting his head on Remus' shoulder, nibbling at various different meats and the occasional potato. James however, had an entire roast dinner - he hadn't eaten since the left for the train so you really couldn't blame him - whilst Peter had his a chicken salad, something him and his mother often had for dinner.
James savoured all every last bit of the food as he knew he'd have a long night ahead with prefect duties, that's on top of normal Head Boy duties as well.
He still needed to unpack his into his new room but that was a job that could wait for the time being.
He looked up from his plate and to his two best friends, that where sat in front of him. He observed how easily Sirius rested his head on Remus' shoulder and how easily Remus' head rested on top of Sirius, almost as if they were two jigsaw pieces.
"James dearest, I get that you're single as fuck but staring at a couple for more than minute can be classed as a bit creepy." Sirius half joked, smirking at his best friend.
James rolled his eyes.
"I'm not lonely as shit, dickhead. She'll say yes at some point!"
Remus and Peter snorted.
"Honestly I'll believe it when I see it mate."
"She will! I bet you a hundred galleons that she'll fall in love with me by the end of the year! James huffed, determined to prove him wrong.
"Prongs, are you sure you don't want to make it one galleon? That's a lot of money you're about to use my love." Sirius smiled at his friend.
"Nope, I'll stick to a hundred Padfoot dearest because I can guarantee you that by this time next year there'll be a hundred galleons missing from your Gringotts account!"
Sirius snorted before leaning up and off moony's shoulder, sticking out his hand for James to shake.
James shook his hand and smirked.
"Anyways, on the topic of being single, have you found anyone yet Pete?" Remus asked, smiling at him.
Peter turned bright pink looking down at his food.
"Oh my God! Has our little baby Wormie finally found someone! When can we meet them!?" Sirius gushed.
"She's a muggle girl that a met in the market next to me and mum's house." He squeaked, turning pinker by the second.
His friends positively beamed at him.
"Well done Petey! You've officially outdone Prongs!"
"For fuck sake can we stop make fun off my lonely and single life!" James complained, banging his head on the table, narrowly missing the plate.
"Never." The three friends said together.
