Once again I awoke to Max's furious shaking.

I gasped as if I had been underwater the entire time, then looked into the waiting swampy eyes of my friend.

"I had a nightmare."

At first he seemed relieved. I was quick to eradicate that relief.

"No, Max. A nightmare about the opera house."

He paled. "What happened?"

"The Phantom... he kidnapped a girl, manipulated her into thinking he was an angel. Now she's trapped in his lair with him! And I couldn't do anything..." tears rolled down my cheeks like landslides.

Max brushed the tears away. "It's alright. It was just a nightmare."

"No! It's real!" I cried at him. He took me in his arms, caressing my hair gently.

"Alright. It's real. What are you going to do?"

"I... I don't know. I thought he was my friend..."

"Then he needs to learn about friendship. Why not read to him?"

It was an appealing thought. Doing something I enjoy to help myself understand someone. But would he welcome it?

"I'll help you choose some books to take with you." said Max.

"Alright." I replied slowly.

This would be a peculiar dream, now wouldn't it?
