Sunlight warms my face, the tree in front of my window grasping onto it before letting it fall upon me. I sit up and take a deep breath as yesterday returns to me.
I would think it was a dream if not for my new room. The magic, the laughter, the friendships forming, all of it was euphoric enough to be a dream. But no, I sit in a new bed, that is freakishly comfortable, and in a new room that is large for a dormitory.
It's painted light gray like the rest of the house. Cabinets take up the wall opposing the bed and wrap around the room, ending underneath the window. Built into the storage system, and under the window, is a desk where I put my pencils and sketchbook. To the other side of the bed are a small closet and a door leading to the bathroom.
I walk to the bathroom, flicking on the lights and stepping inside. Again, for a dormitory, it's a good size, especially considering I don't have to share it. Whoever designed the place has managed to fit a toilet, shower, bathtub, and sink into the room, the floors tiled and walls white.
I shower quickly, excitement for the day ahead filling me. As I dry off, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and pause. I've never been confident with my body; I don't think I ever will be. I don't look that overweight when I'm in clothes, but I can tell now, staring into my mirror naked. My body lacks any form of muscle, my skin loose and blubbery.
Taking a deep breath, I continue to ready myself. If this were a dream, I wouldn't look like this. It takes a few minutes, but once I've pulled on a sweater and some gray pants, I leave my room and walk into the kitchen.
"Good morning." Sarah chimes from the couch.
"Morning," I reply, heading for the coffee maker.
I scan the contraption, a smile filling my face. An espresso machine... I grab a cup and pour some coffee grains into the portafilter, screwing it back onto the machine. James enters the room as I press the brew button and coffee fills my cup.
"When Elise wakes up, do you guys want to go to the cafeteria for breakfast?" James asks, sitting at the kitchen island.
"Sure," I say, taking a sip of my coffee and adding some extra sugar.
"Neither Instagram of Snapchat works here." Sarah sighs, looking up from her phone.
"Weird," James replies. "Maybe the Wi-Fi blocks it, so we don't show any normal people magic?"
"That'd make sense," Sarah says.
"Ask Elise, she seems to know everything," James suggests. "If she ever wakes up.".
Right on cue, a door opens down the hall and Elise walks from her room. Her hair looks like a bird has nested in it, her cheeks are puffy, and she wears sweatpants and an oversized shirt.
"The Wi-Fi blocks it." Elise mumbles, leaning against a wall. "I need food."
Sarah shakes her head. "Get dressed then, we were thinking of going to the cafeteria for food."
