The first class of the day is Biology of Magic Creatures, located in Green House 3. James, Sarah, Elise, and I leave through the exterior doors of the cafeteria once the bell rings, stepping into the warm world outside.
The sky is bright, a warm breeze swaying the flowers in the garden as we walk through it. School starts later on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so instead of 8:30, the first bell rings at 9:15. The sun has long since risen, touching my face and the world gently. The gardens are peaceful, only a few other first years walking through it on their way to the Green Houses.
From the exterior, the plant houses look like they should be in a House & Home magazine. They're made of dark wood and shaped triangularly, like a tent. Glass makes up most of the walls, filling the spaces between the thick planks. From here, I can see vines and flowers flourishing inside. Some look ordinary, others not so much.
"So, this is pretty much biology?" James asks as we find the third greenhouse.
"Kind of." Elise replies. "I think it's pretty hands-on, though."
I open the door to the greenhouse. The room is humid, moisture clinging to the room and dripping down the windows. A concrete table spans the width of the greenhouse, chairs set up around it. Plants fill the room, hanging from wooden rafters, placed on countertops, some even on the floor. Butterflies and bees circulate the room, able to leave and enter through slits on the side of the walls.
Along the windows, a long row of cabinets holds lavender, roses, and tulips. Amongst them are plants I've never seen before, each with intricate petals and louring fragrances.
A chime rings out, and a man with long hair covering his forehead extends his hand. The room goes quiet, the only sound from the various pollinating insects.
"Now be quiet all." He whispers. "You'll hurt the plants' ears."
A few nervous laughs fill the room as the teacher stands up from his hunched position.
"That was a joke." He says. "You're allowed to laugh."
I shoot Elise a glance, amusement flashing on her face.
"My name is Mr. Twill, and I will be one of your teachers in this class. On Tuesdays, you will have me teaching you about the spectacular plants in this world. On Thursday, however, you must leave the warmth of the Green House and brace the cold as Mrs. Roberta teachers you about the magic animals. Next year you will choose between the two of us to continue your Biology of Magic Species studies."
The man hobbles over to the side table, where plants brush against the window, and takes a gray pot and placing it on the table. In it is a large flower, it's petals like snow. There must be hundreds of petals, all overlapping one another and surrounding a blood-red center.
Mr. Twill slides the pot through a groove in the table, making it flesh with its surface, and grabs a white bin from the side of the room,
"This is a Litros, one of the many carnivorous plants of the magic world." Mr. Twill says, reaching into the bin and grabbing a handful of something. He opens his palm, dropping spiders onto the table before continuing.
