The Thirteenth

Chapter Five

“You did what?”

“Have you lost your mind, crazy lady?”

“Wow, I’ve always admired your guts, but this is a whole new level.”

The first two came at once and the third comment was thrown at me casually. The first one was Jason’s and second was Al’s. The third one was from Rogers. He sat with us today for lunch because he woke up successfully without sleeping in.

Have I told you why we call him Rogers? His actual name was Will Rogers. But in the past, we teased him with statements like ‘Will, will you set the stage?’, ‘Will, will you pass me the sauce?’ and the day he couldn’t take it anymore was when I said: Will, will your dad leave a large sum of money in your name when he writes his will? Because you’re such a willy-boo-boo.

The sentence actually made no sense and I intended it to be funny, but it wasn’t. I failed on both aspects: grammar and humor. My plain intention was to use Will’s name as much as possible. But he got annoyed and ordered all of us to call him Rogers. It was hard in the beginning and we still teased him, but then Rogers was the word we slowly got used to.

After what happened in first period Chem, I attended AP Math and World History. I had four AP classes- Calculus, World History, Math and Chem. After enduring the torture, which seemed a lot harder to go bear today since I was sleep deprived, I went to my locker and put my unwanted books in it. Then I sauntered to our table in the cafeteria after collecting my tray.

“Calm down for god’s sake. I did nothing. He was rude so I just set him straight. Nothing much.” I coolly took a bite of the taco and set it down on my plate.

Jace and Al were shocked when I told them what said to Mr. Wilson. But what I said didn’t even constitute half of what I actually said. I cut short a lot of information and this was the reaction that I had got. They bombarded me with a lot of questions. God, save me.

“Look, all I did was explain a few things to him like how I didn’t need any help with chem. But he insisted, so I said I was fine on my own. Then he got angry and asked me to respect him, but well, you know me,” I chuckled to lighten up the mood and failed. Al and Jace were still pinning me down with their looks. I continued after eyeing them doubtfully, “I just kind of threatened him, well not threatened… told him that if he used harsh language, I’d report to the principal.”

I get back to eating my taco and didn’t look up until Al’s voice reached my ears. “Um, he used harsh language?” God, she was slowly extracting every bit of information that I was trying to hide.

“Yeah, he didn’t like the fact that I gave that smart retort in class. That’s all… Hey, how was my comeback?” I winked at Al and tried my best to change the subject. All these years of friendship with Al and Jace were enough to know that they wouldn’t appreciate me if I told them the exact words I said to him or threatened him.

Jace thankfully changed the topic before Al could come up with another question. He beamed at me, “Hey, by the way, tomorrow is the auditions for the spring musical. They have preponed the auditions. Help me practice one more time tonight and you’ll be free.” I didn’t understand why I needed to be there when he practiced because he sang well and I had to just sit there on his bed and look at him boringly. I told him yesterday and he just replied that having someone just watch him do it calms him down and prepares him. Only Jason will understand his logic.
