The Thirteenth
Chapter Sixteen
"What about being a school teacher?" I whimpered, asking this like it was the most important one now.
"Seriously? My undercover as a teacher is the question that strikes your mind when I tell you that I'm about to kill you father? My, my... he must be proud of you." He paused to drink some water and continued, "All a part of the assignment... You know following you, getting into your house, for the grand move which is killing your father, a renowned a chemist, Robert Spencer."
"Why?"
"Why? Oh come on, I thought you watched enough TV shows and movies to figure this out. Money, baby," He grinned wolfishly.
I switched my gaze to Marcus, who was looking at his nails like this was a normal conversation he would have on a Saturday morning, in his friend's living room. "Why did you break into my house? I don't get it. I mean, you already came into my house...with my permission,"
"First thing, don't ask so many questions. I could kill you too; it's not a big deal for us. From now on, you should follow a few rules that I'm gonna lay right now. Get it?"
When I didn't answer, he stepped forward, gripped my chin and repeated "Do you f*cking get it?" He seethed.
I nodded. My eyes burned with tears, but I tried my best to not break down in front of my captors. Momentary weakness was their strength.
"Good," he said, his eyes holding mine. His fingers traced the outline of my lips, so softly that I almost didn't notice. Then he cleared his throat to distract himself, and me. "I might need some help from you. Not might; you should help me, no choice there. I need a file, and only you, I'm assuming, would know the location of this file."
I threw my head back and laughed after listening to his proposition. "So you aren't a great assassin then? Who takes the help of the target's daughter? What makes you think I'll give you the file when you're going to kill my father regardless?"
His eyes narrowed and he gripped the arms of the chair, his face merely a few inches away from my own. "Didn't you hear me? I said I could kill you!"
My eyes roamed his face and I bit my lips. "What if I still don't? You would kill me, but that'll just delay the process, won't it?"
He sighed, leaning back and sitting on his knees. "Yes, but I could cut you a deal. All starting after you agree to help us find the file."
"Okay," I breathed. He didn't expect to hear it so soon from me.
"Okay?" He frowned.
"Yes, what's the deal?" I asked, putting my serious face on. There was no time for emotions. I was insanely curious. What royal shitty file did my father have that deemed so worthy of killing him and me?
He eyed Marcus who signaled him for a private talk. He got up and followed him into the room. I heard some muffled voice and growls, but nothing was coherent enough for me to gather information.
They came back with Marcus shaking his head, looking pissed. Did they not have a deal? Were they playing me?
"Are you guys playing me? I thought you were ready!"
"Shut the hell up, will ya? Whiny b*tch!" Marcus snapped.
Rubbing his hands together Zach sat in front of me. "Listen carefully now,"
Marcus rolled his eyes behind him and snorted. "Shut up, Marcus," Zach cut him.
"Your father, Spencer, is a chemist. He has created a drug – I'm unaware of the details – but it's said that on injecting it into your system, it causes a disease. There was a grand plan behind it, involving you father and another man, but things fell apart. Not that any of that matters now, but my mission is to get the file and kill your dad. Since after a few failed attempts, we're still unable to locate it, that's where you come in. Your job is to find the file and give it to us – "
"That doesn't sound like a deal. What do I get out of th– ?"
"Let me finish!" he shouted and got up from his chair. "Fuck, fuck, fuck..." he chanted, pacing the room like he made a mistake.
Marcus muttered, "I told you, Knight,"
"Get out! Just get out, Marcus," He yelled frantically, tugging on his hair. When Marcus lingered, he looked up and glared at him. Marcus silently walked out, shutting the door behind him.
"Your father might live," He said, almost inaudible.
"You don't seem sure at all!" I said dubiously.
"I am!" He stressed. "What do you need? A signed agreement?"
"I didn't say that, but it clearly seems like Marcus is disagreeing with you and obviously your boss won't agree,"
"What boss?" He frowned.
"Oh, come on, you are so unsure of all this. There definitely is a boss! And, look at you, you're so young. You couldn't have been able to handle all this by yourself. No one will trust you with such a mission," My eyebrows were raised with slight sarcasm looking at his expression.
"You underestimate my abilities, Ames,"
I stayed silent. Ames?
"You don't have a choice," He said a moment later. I could feel his rage slowly dissipate from him and seep into me. How could he be unsure? We were talking about my father's life and my own life on the line! But of course, he was a goddamn assassin, not a saint. Why would he care about his targets? This was his job. The thought disgusted me; killing innocent souls for tainted money.
When I voiced that his assurance was a must, he merely shrugged and said, "That's all I can offer. No promises. Should you choose accept it, then your father and you might walk away unharmed, and in case of rejection, everyone is killed and we'll still eventually get the file. It's all up to you to change both of your lives or ruin it."
He walked away, leaving me alone with my thoughts echoing in my head. People I'd had come across in my life told me one would have many life-changing moments, choice to make and decisions to take – whether for the better or worst – and I sat there, tied to the chair thinking is that was one of them.
I didn't have to think if it was anymore. I knew this moment was going to change my life from hereon.

Hey guys! Sigh!
I know! I've been gone for a long time and I'm truly sorry! I was so confused with the plot but I think that now I can get back now. This chapter is really, really short, I know! This is a major shift in the story, so I thought it'd be better to end it here.Tell me what you think about the story so far! The song above is What Now by Rihanna. Listen to it while reading this chapter :)
