Year 1995

Leaves and trees brushing against my window. It's my favorite time of the season again. Fall. Breezy and cool air meeting you body once you get out of the house. The crisp air ruining your hair. It's also my Mom's favorite season. During Fall my mom and I would eat ice cream, rake and play with the leaves at the end of the day we would watch the sunset near the beach with my dad. As the night falls, my mom would tuck me into bed and read me stories about fairies, princesses, magic, pirates, princes, and happy endings.

"'Tinkerbell! Stop fighting with Wendy.' yelled Peter. " My Mom's telling me the story about Peter Pan. I Like pirates and magic. I yawned and my eyes are droopy and then my mom said, "Good Night, my pirate. Sweet dreams." She kissed me on my forehead and tucked me in. The next day, I woke up with the sound of my mom's weary voice. She sounds like she hasn't had any sleep. "Wake up, May." I rubbed my eyes and stretched my arms. I looked at mom and she has black circles under her eyes. I wondered what it was. "Mommy, why do your eyes have very big circles under them? Is that makeup, mommy? ", I squeaked. "May, your Mama Nana had an accident. " she said in a sad voice. Mama Nana is my daddy 's mother. She's one of my favorite nana 's. "What happened mommy? " I asked.
"Remember what I said on your 5th birthday? Mama Nana had some places to go after that day. While traveling, she got hit by a drunk driver at Seattle." She said crying. My Mom was close to Mama Nana. So was my dad. No one can resist Mama Nana as she always said.

It was my 5th birthday, she came for a visit. She always travel and every place she would travel she would buy me a book filled with fantasies and magic, but on that day she said she had to go somewhere far. She wouldn't come home until my 6th birthday was coming up and my birthday is on Wednesday, October 6. I stood up and looked at my calendar on top of my study table. "Mommy, its October 5." I showed her my calendar. Mama nana and I marked it on my 5th birthday. She said that she will be returning a day before my birthday. Mommy looked at me while crying and then she hugged me tightly. I didn't know what to do. "Mommy, Mama Nana is okay right? She's very strong, like daddy and you." Mommy sobbed quietly and said nothing.

The day of my Mama nana 's funeral had many people. I didn't know who they were. We dressed in all black. I wore a black dress. Mommy carried me on the way to the funeral. Daddy had to welcome guests. I saw Mama Nana laying in some sort of box. Mommy put me down on my feet and I ran towards Mama nana while holding the book she bought for my birthday. "Mama Nana! Mama Nana! Why are you sleeping? We have guests today. Its my birthday today! Mommy said that we wouldn't be able to celebrated my birthday because we had to do something today. Mama Nana! Wake up! Read me the book you bought me before. " Before I could say anything else A pair of big hands grabbed me by my waist and carried me outside the garden. Daddy kneeled and said, "May. There are guests inside. You need to show your good behavior. " I crossed my arms and said, "But, Daddy! Mama nana is not talking to me. She's still asleep in the box. She can't hear me." Daddy rubbed his temple and took a big sigh. "May, mama nana's gone." He said not looking at me. "No she's not! She's sleeping inside!" I said while stomping. At the same time, Mommy went to us. "What's going on?" She asked. Daddy stood up and said, "Talk to your daughter. She made an enough scandal at the funeral." Then he went inside slamming the door. Mommy kneeled and said, "May, you can't just go running inside. We need to pay respect to Mama nana. " "Mommy, Mama nana is just sleeping." I said slouching. Mommy sighed and said, "Just be on your good behavior tonight okay? Daddy has many things running through his mind right now." I nodded. Mommy grabbed my hand and we walked inside together.

That Night, Mommy gave me a shower and tucked me to bed. Before I went to sleep, Mommy said, "Happy Birthday, My Pirate!" I squeeked in delight. Mommy handed me a small box. I opened it and found the prettiest charm bracelet. It has a book charm, a magic wand, a ship, and a flower. I closed the box and said, "Thank You Mommy! Its very pretty. " I hugged her and she hugged back. She smiled and stood up. She kissed my forehead and headed for the door. My smile disappeared. "No, bedtime story?" I asked in a sad voice. She shook her head and said, "Not today, May. Get some sleep. Its been a long day. " She closed the lights and the door. I cuddled into my blanket and fell asleep. I woke up by the sound yelling outside my door. I opened eyes and peeked under my door. I didn't see anything but shadows. I got scared and went back hiding under my covers. The yelling was still going on outside. I closed my eyes and tried go to sleep again.
