WASTELANDS.

chapter one, trapped.
[ season one, episode two ]

"ODESSA GRIMES!" HER MOTHER shouts her name. She groans to herself from where she sits beside Amy Harrison.

"Better go see what she's yelling about this time," Amy says to her with a small frown.

"Or I could just ignore her." Odessa shrugs.

Before Amy can response, they hear Lori shouting her name again. "Jesus, I'm coming!" Odessa calls back. She stands to her feet, "sorry, Ams."

"It's fine," Amy nods. Odessa leaves her blonde friend to find her mother sitting around a small table with Carol Peletier and her daughter, Sophia, and Carl Grimes, Odessa's younger brother.

"What is it?" Odessa asks.

"Sit down, you have to learn your math." Lori motions to the open seat beside Carl.

"No." Odessa says bluntly.

"No?" Lori repeats with raised eyebrows.

"No." Odessa confirms. "The world is shit. There's not point in learning— what is that? Pre-cal?" Odessa looks at the booklet.

"Don't cuss in front of your brother and Sophia," Lori hisses. "You're going to listen to me and sit here and learn this math."

"I said no, Mom." Odessa rolls her eyes.

"What's going on here?" A new voice asks from behind Odessa. She turns her head to see Shane Walsh walking up to the group.

"Odessa's refusing to learn her math." Lori informs him.

He looks to her with a stern face. "Look, I don't care about you not learning math because who the hell needs math now? But do not disrespect your mother, you hear me?"

A shocked look crosses Odessa's face. Carol ushers Carl and Sophia away from the scene when she sees the look on the sixteen year old's face.

"You're kidding, right?" Odessa laughes. "You're joking. You're not my dad, Shane! My dad is dead! You don't get to step up and become the new Rick Grimes and act like my dad or Carl's. He doesn't realize what you're doing but I do!" She shouts, tears welling in her eyes.

Lori's jaw drops at her daughter's outburst. Lori understands her anger. It'd been a month since the world turned to shit and Shane told the Grimes family that Rick Grimes was dead.

"Odessa!" Lori cries. "Apologize right now!"

"No!" She looks to her mother with wide eyes. "Why should I? He's not dad! He's just Shane!"

She looks between the two in a state of blinding rage. "Don't act like a mother when you've barely been one to me for the last six years," her eyes then turn to Shane, "and don't act like my fucking father."

She turns and leaves the two on their own. She walks down the path to the quarry and sits by the bright blue water. She takes her shoes off and sticks her feet in the water.

She clears her throat as tears well in her eyes, making them almost as blue as the water in front of her. "I miss you, Dad." She whispers to herself. She fiddles with the bracelet around her wrist. It is a messily braided friendship with her dad's favorite colors. Gray, red, and black.

He had the other made of her favorite colors— light purple, white, and black. His was braided neatly thought. Oh, how she missed her dad.

She sits by the quarry with her feet in the water for a couple hours, just crying to herself. Mourning the loss of her father. She'd never truly get over his death.
