"Sam?"
Max's heart dropped. Beads of sweat poured down his blanched face.
Violently, the ground trembled beneath him as the thunderous steps grew closer. Max struggled desperately to keep his footing atop the quakes. Crashing metal screeched in his ears.
"Nononononono I-" He stammered. His head rocked back and fourth in a weak attempt at denial. "Not again! Sam!"
The buildings around him crumbled to the concrete. Glass shattered. Frantically, he covered his face as screams rang out from the citizens who were appalled by the looming monstrosity. Desperate cries were uttered by those dying, caught in the crossfire of debris.
The tremors grew closer. Rhythmically, they jolted everything upwards from the floor, before striking them down on the jagged pavement. The sparks of fire from broken wires threatened to set the whole town ablaze.
Max tumbled, his foot losing against the uneven floor. Tightly, his fists clenched in fear as he listened to the steps grow louder and louder.
His body shuddered, his eyes grew wide and his breathing raced furiously.
He recognized Sam in the distance.
The beasts hands grasped at the far skyscrapers; he pushed them apart effortlessly. Enraged, he took hold of the building and threw it forcefully without any clear motive. He let out a demonic howl. It pierced through the yelling, the crowds and the burning of the landscape. Burrowing, the sound pushed into Max's mind and instilled him with unbridled terror and heartache.
Shocked, Max refused to move. He sat locked in a standstill, mortified by the sight he beheld.
"We have to go..." The words were urgent and loud, but muffled to Max. Unable to process the warning, he remained in his horrified trance. "Now!"
Before he could process, Max was dragged haphazardly against the broken rubble. Desperately he tried to protest, the pit of his stomach enveloped in a debilitating feeling of déjà-vu.
"Let me go!" He shouted, throwing his arms. He tried to reach out towards the beast, his hands trembling intensely. "I can't leave him again! He'll die if I leave now!"
Wheezing, he threw his feet against the ground, pleading to be released. He lashed at his captor, in a futile attempt at escape. The grip snaring him was irremovable.
Unable to escape, his attention returned to Sam. He watched, engulfed in a nauseating panic, as the beast maneuvered closer to him. The distance between them diminishing rapidly.
His lips shivered frightfully. His eyes swelling further and further with tears.
He called out impassioned and scared, begging to be heard by his partner.
"SAM!"
. . .
"Well, that was terrifying!" Sam gulped, his chest rising up and down as he breathed shallowly. He clutched his tie and tried to diminish his rapid gasps. The weight of his jacket pulled against him as he slowly sat up from the tile flooring. His head was pounding. "What do you think, Max?"
He surveyed the room, unable to pinpoint where he was. The walls were too close and radiated a claustrophobic feeling.
"Uh, Max?" He called out again to confirm the absence of his partner. Tugging at his shirt collar uncomfortably, his eyes nervously glanced around. His hair stood on end.
