Heaven’s Light
Sesshomaru had never felt the need for a companion, aside from in the spring and fall during the mating seasons. But then along came Jaken and Rin. Jaken was quite the annoyance, and just about worthless, but he had grown accustomed to him; he had gotten used to having something to throw a rock at, or insult. Rin, though, she changed him. He both blessed and cursed her for it. Letting go of the Tessaiga and gaining back his arm and Bakusaiga had given him the strength to surpass even his father as a Daiyokai. But she was human.
Rin had grown up, gotten married, had children, grown old, gotten sick, and then passed away. He had, for three centuries contented himself with caring for her descendants, but the family line had died out. Two centuries later, and he was beginning to feel the weight of nothingness. He had his security company, with employees like InuYasha and Koga who knew who and what he was. Had Jaken, who had obtained an amulet that made him appear as a small elderly man. But no one meaningful.
It was these thoughts he was dwelling on when his secretary set his coffee on his desk. Damn that addicting human concoction. One of Rin’s great-great-grandchildren had coaxed him into tasting it, and ever since, he couldn’t seem to resist the stuff. Especially when Makato made it. He put cinnamon and vanilla in it, and eggnog during the Christmas season, like today. He took a long appreciative sniff of it as he studied the young hanyou.
He was slender, as if he rarely ate despite the large paycheck he got every two weeks, and only a few inches shorter than the Daiyokai with dark brown hair streaked with lighter brown, golden, and white blond highlights and two black ears with tufts of fur at the tips. He wore a white button-down shirt and a black tie with matching black trousers that were perfectly tailored, showing a rear end that Sesshomaru had often caught himself ogling. He was two hundred years old, meaning his first heat would be this spring.
Lowering his eyes to the cup he took a sip, forcing himself to savor it rather than gulp down the scalding liquid.
“It’s satisfactory.” He told him, as he usually did. The truth was it was amazing, but it wasn’t like him to say such things. Usually the Lynx just nodded and left after he knew nothing was wrong with the coffee, but this time he lingered. The CEO rose an eyebrow in question. “Is there something else?”
He looked uncharacteristically nervous, biting his lower lip and casting his eyes aside. One of the reasons Sesshomaru had hired him was his calm, unflappable demeanor and steady bravery. He waited curiously. After all, he hadn’t been at all nervous when he demanded a raise two weeks into the job for putting up with InuYasha.
“Tomorrow is Christmas Eve,” he started, his voice steady despite his obvious nerves, “I know I really have no right to ask this, especially since you don’t even celebrate Christmas, but… I would like it very much if you’d have dinner with me at my place. That is, if you want to… I’m just sick of spending it alone.”
Normally he’d scoff at the invitation. Perhaps even snap him, but his voice, and his scent were so sad, so lonely. He’d noticed before, when his clients brought their wives or children to sign contracts, or when InuYasha brought Kagome around, but never sought to do anything about it. Makato was only his secretary, after all. Nothing more. It wasn’t his business.
But now that he was being asked…
“What time?”
Just those two words had the most profound effect; Makato’s Greenish-yellow eyes lit up, shimmering like canary diamonds, and he smiled, “Is 6:30 a good time for you?”
“Yes. Your address is on file?”
“Sure is. Do you need directions?”
He shook his head. With today’s technology, he could just google-map it.
