Chapter 04: The Sorting Ceremony

"Where are the oars," Chrissy asked as the two girls hopped into the boat. "It's bewitched," a boy answered in a tone Seraphina did not care for. Seraphina recognized Zacharias Smith with his blonde hair and upturned nose that matched his personality. Her parents knew his and they were part of the same formal functions. On the rare occasions Seraphina was home to attend, she would be encouraged to talk with those of pure-blood relations. To make the right friends.

"Zacharias Smith." Seraphina stated.

"Seraphina Montgomery." Zacharias replied.

"I'm Christine Quimby," Chrissy said, picking up on Seraphina's dislike of the boy. While she was of the mindset to give others the benefit of the doubt, something in the way Seraphina held herself told her she should follow her friend's lead. "Who is your friend," she asked.

Another boy appeared with dark hair and matching eyes that held both kindness and curiosity. Seraphina shrugged her shoulders when Chrissy looked to her for an answer. Zacharias gave no indication that he was going to make introductions.

"I'm Michael Corner. Nice to meet you two," said the boy as he sat down next to Zacharias. Smith gave Seraphina a questioning look from her to Chrissy. Seraphina glared at him and he turned away nonchalantly.

The silence was only broken by the sounds of the toads singing in the lake. "Oh, I wonder if that boy found his toad," Chrissy exclaimed. "I'm sure he will be alright," Seraphina said although she doubted he had found it. "That toad has been lost since Longbottom boarded the train. I doubt he'll ever see it again," Zacharias said with a roll of his eyes. Michael Corner ignored his insensitive remark and focused on Chrissy and Seraphina.

"Have you any idea which house you'll be sorted in," Michael asked, looking at Seraphina. "I'll probably follow my mother and grandmother's footsteps and be in Slytherin," Seraphina said with a smile. "They don't exactly have a good reputation from what I heard," Michael admitted with a shy smile. "Then maybe I should change that," Seraphina said with a wink. She liked Michael's personality and he wasn't stuck up like Zacharius was on blood purity. "Quimby, have you decided on a house you think will suit you," Seraphina asked. Michael turned his focus on Chrissy who shook her head and blushed.

"I met Seraphina at Ollivander's and she has been so nice to me, I hope I could be in the same house as her," Quimby admitted. "You never know. You have some of the Fawley lineage in you Montgomery. You could be a Hufflepuff yet," Zacharias said. Seraphina's nose wrinkled and she took a calming breath. "Whether I am in Hufflepuff like my cousins or Slytherin like my mom, I'm sure I'll end up in a house that will lead me to success," Seraphina practically snarled. They were her mother's words but Zacharias was beginning to irritate her. Hufflepuff was not a bad house to be in. It was that Hufflepuff did not seem like her house.

"I'm not sure where I will end up either Chris—," Michael Corner said sheepishly.

"FORWARD!" shouted Hagrid.

"Whoa!" Chrissy and Michael exclaimed as the boat suddenly moved. "This is amazing," she said turning to Seraphina who laughed as well.

"That reminds me Montgomery. Has your mother finished that potion? My mum ordered it last month. What's the hold-up," Zacharias asked. Seraphina suppressed the urge to roll her eyes. "She should have it completed by next Thursday, Zacharias," Seraphina said, beginning to explain the complexities of the potion that had been requested as the boat continued its journey with the others. Michael and Chrissy listened in fascination as Seraphina explained the details of the potion with fluency. While her mother never let her in the lab, she did talk shop during dinners quite frequently. She had especially been vocal about the Smith's order as they tried to rush a potion that took a month into a two weeks. Seraphina was only interrupted by Michael tugging on the sleeve of her robe and pointing behind her.
