The Merman (L.S)

"You know it's like- almost morning, right?" I asked Harry as we walked to the beach.

He woke me up in the middle of the night telling me he wanted to go swimming. I looked at him as if he was crazy and said, "Are you out of your bloody mind!?"

I couldn't convince him it was literally in the middle of the fucking night, so I had no choice but to agree.

"I know, but I need to swim. If I stay out of the water long enough, I will get very sick." He explained as we got closer to the beach.

"What happens when you get sick?" I asked, curiously.

"I get scaly and start coughing." He answered. He moved a piece of his long hair out of his face, and places it behind his ear.

"Oh."

We soon get to the beach, and Harry immediately runs to the water, but then stopped suddenly.

He looked over at me and then began walking back to me.

"You're not swimming with me?" He frowned, asking.

I looked at him clueless. "Are you kidding? it's bloody winter and the water is cold!" He flinched at my tone of voice, and my face softens.

"Harry- I- I'm sorry." I apologised, feeling bad.

He turned around and slowly walked back to the water. Before he could go any further, I took out the snorkel gear that I brought just in case he wanted me to swim with him, and walked toward him and stopped him by gently grabbing his hand.

He looked down at our hands and back at me, confused.

"I will swim with you." He immediately smiles wide at that.

He waited for me to fix the snorkel on my face and turn the little light on it so I could be able to see, since it was dark out. When done, I noticed greyish scale-like patches forming on his cheeks.

He was serious I thought.

I grabbed his hand again, and we ran to the water. Once in, I waited for Harry to transform, which was a dreadful sight.

I couldn't imagine the amount of pain he feels when going back to his merman form. It looked so painful, that even I felt it.

After a few seconds of screaming anguish, he was fully transformed.

He swam towards me and grabbed my hand gently. We began swimming for what felt like forever.

I looked around at the beauty of the water, and it was like I was in another world. Never have I ever been so close to fish before.

Harry lets go of my hand and began doing little twirls; I smiled fondly at him as I watched him do them.

He grabs my hand again, and we continue swimming. As new sea creatures began to appear, I knew we were far from home.

I knew mermaids and mermen could swim really far, but experiencing it for myself, it felt almost like a dream.

I looked around and saw dolphins, cod, and even crabs. I have never been so close to these creatures. It felt amazing.

He lets go of my hand again and turns to me. He got closer and gently, but nearly, touches behind my ear. I was confused for a second until I started hearing sounds.

I smiled as I heard what sounded like whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures. It felt like I was in a whole other world.

After about 12 minutes it seemed like, we swam up for air.

I took the snorkel off and breathed a breath of relief, as I could finally get some air after swimming for some time.

"That was sick!" I exclaimed in excitement.

"Glad you enjoyed it."  He replied.

"You have to take me swimming again, that was so much fun." I tell him, remembering the incredible experience I just had not even a second ago.

"I will, I promise." He said, smiling kindly.

"Let's head back. I'm still very tired." He nods, and we get back in the water and swim home.

As we swim back home, I knew this was an experience I would never forget.
