There was silence for a while since the man left, and you were unsure of what he expected you to do in that time. Were you supposed to wait for him to come back with something? Follow him out?
You moved off the metal surface and landed on the floor with wobbly legs, feeling stings of pain as you remembered your wounds existed. They didn't hurt as much as before, thankfully. You walked towards where you heard the pirate had went, hoping to get more information. Your hands moved across the wall, slowly finding your way to what you felt was a door.
"We'll arrive there in about three days at this pace," you heard a voice say behind it, somewhat slow and gruff.
"Speed it up." Law's voice, cold and commanding. "It'll be bad if we're late."
"Aye, Captain!"
You couldn't tell how many people were there, but you could hear a few footsteps leaving.
"Penguin, Shachi," Law called. The footsteps stopped and you could barely make out that it was three people, and two had stopped when Law called. "Get a new pair of clothes and set up a room for our... guest. They'll be staying with us for a while." He said it somewhat disdainfully, as if he didn't want you here.
"Gotcha, Captain. What's their size? Who are they anyway?"
"See for yourself."
Suddenly, the door opened and hit your face. It was quite forceful, and without sight it was difficult to keep your balance. You fell to the ground and what was left of your eyes under the bandages felt like they were tearing up due to the hit on your nose. What made it worst was that you had heard them approaching and the door opening, but you weren't able to tell how far away they were or which way the door was opening.
"Idiot," Law scoffed. You could feel the eyes watching you as you held your nose and felt your face reddened from embarrassment. Before you could retort back, you felt a pair of arms help you up slowly.
"You okay there?"
"Sorry about that. I was a bit too excited opening the door; I wasn't expecting you there!"
"I'm fine." It seemed like the nice people were the ones not in charge, you figured with dismay. "Thanks."
"This is Penguin and Shachi," Law introduced with some reluctance in his voice. "Get acquainted since you'll be here for a while. I'm going to get my equipment for your surgery."
You frowned, getting a feeling that he was only trying to take advantage of you and the crystal. That was the only thing of value you had. You soon heard the footsteps of Law leaving before you could say anything more.
"You're dealings with your blindness surprisingly well." One of them patted your shoulder. "I'm Shachi by the way."
"You'd think someone who just lost their sight would be devastated and depressed," the other added. "I'm Penguin. Hopefully you can separate our voices."
They were different enough, you supposed. "[Y/N], nice to meet you two," you said shortly with a half-smile. "Thanks for helping me."
"Not a problem," Shachi said. "Our captain is rarely as interested as he is right now in strangers like you, so you must have done something right to catch his attention."
"He usually does this expecting people to pay him back, but considering you have pretty much nothing, it's strange," Penguin added bluntly.
You tilted your head, confused. Law must not have told them about the crystal or you knowing his full name out of nowhere. "Is there anything I can do? I do intend to pay him back some way or another."
You didn't want to have to owe people favors again.
"Considering you're blind... I can't think of anything Captain would want you to do."
You figured as much. You sighed and slumped your shoulders.
"You can always ask," Penguin said cheerfully.
"If you're worried about being kicked off, don't worry," Shachi reassured. "Our captain has a heart."
That's good. These two were much nicer than Law, so you felt a lot more relaxed with them... almost trusting them.
"He could even take yours!"
What did that mean?
"Even though he is called the Surgeon of Death...."
That wasn't reassuring.
"I've got the tools," Law's voice called out suddenly. The opening of the door was heard and there were clinks of metal and something rolling across the floor. "Get going, you two."
"Come on, now?" Penguin complained half-heartedly. "We were just getting to know them!"
Despite his words of reluctance, you heard their footsteps leaving after a farewell to you.
"Sit down." Law's voice once again startled you with the sudden closeness. "Lie back."
You pursed your lips and lied back down, nervous. "You mentioned making glass eyes. Can you put this crystal in one of them?" You held out the crystal to the source of his voice. "I want it to be kept safer and hidden."
He hummed affirmatively and took the crystal with little hesitance.
"How come you're helping me so much?" you asked carefully.
You heard the snapping of plastic, presumably gloves, and clinks of metal as he prepared for the surgery. After a moment of silence, he sighed frustratedly. "I'll be using you," he said bluntly. "In return for helping you."
It wasn't far off from what you expected, but you had no clue as to how he'd "use" you. You had figured he'd want the crystal to sell or bargain with the Marines or something. Why would this pirate be interested in the past or future?
"After I accomplish my current goal, I will have you help me complete my next," he continued. He was talking as if you were a child. "You said that you can see into the past with it, and I'm interested in it."
"I don't know how to use it exactly," you admitted. "What do you even want to know?"
"So, learn. I want some information on the Will of D." You paused. You've heard that before when you saw the vision of what you assumed was Law's past. Presumably seeing your hesitance, he continued, "Do you know something about it?"
"I saw a bit of your past, actually."
"How much?" His voice sounded tense, not liking what you said.
"Not too much," you said carefully. "Just flashes of you... as a child, I'm guessing, and two blond men. And... Will of D popped into my head.
He muttered something under his breath you didn't quite catch. "That's it?"
"Yeah." You weren't sure if telling him all this was a good idea, but you needed his trust and help. "I'll try my best to control it more and help you in whatever you're working towards."
"Don't get the wrong idea," he said coldly. "I have other things to worry about at the moment and you're just going to be here temporarily until you pay me back."
You nodded, expecting that answer. "I owe you that much."
He grunted in acknowledgment, ending the conversation there. A few minutes later, you heard some of his tools being set down and another pair being picked up. "You ready?"
You hesitated for a moment."'Surgeon of Death'," you repeated. "Should I be concerned about that title?"
"Of course not." You could hear a smirk in his voice as he said those words. He put a gloved hand on your arm. "I'll be putting you under anesthesia." You nodded reluctantly, unsure if the sudden change in tone in his voice was going to be a concern or not, but not really having any say on the matter.
"Alright."
