PIES CHINESE NEW YEAR PARTY - 23RD JANUARY 2050

He left the crowded room slowly and quietly. No one noticed his disappearance, absolutely no one.

Except for the security cameras, probably. Not that he cared anyways.

He took the elevator up, looking out its glass window that showed the view of the sea surrounding Hong Kong and small glimpses of Lantau Island. Yet, the view was still missing the familiar distant silhouettes of the three tall tubes that used to be on Lamma Island.

Not that it was still there, anyways.

After walking through corridor after corridor, he took a sharp left turn and was faced with a large metal door, which opened at his presence, revealing an empty room with nothing but a tall step in front of a large window, long pillars lined against it. The stars glowed faintly in the sky, and the occasional flashing light could be seen, most likely that of an airplane in the sky.

He climbed onto the step as the door closed behind him, propping his legs against one of the pillars and leaning against another, before looking out of the window and heaving a sigh. The Institue's parties were too loud for him. He liked this place anyways, so why not stay here for a little while?

Chinese New Year was one of the most celebrated holidays in Hong Kong, just like it had been 30 years ago, when the Institute had just formed. Every year, the people at the Institute would have a party to celebrate another year of grand achievements in the fields of engineering and science.

Or that was what the public assumed, anyways.

He was one of the only ones who knew the truth. He had been forced to face it years ago. Maybe one day, the public would have to do the same too.

But tonight was not a night for moping around and being melodramatic. Slowly, he took a small lai see packet out of his pocket, contemplating about what he should do with it. No, he told himself. I shouldn't open it now. It's impolite to do so.

Another sigh. Maybe I should stop sighing. He thought.

"Happy New Year." He said to no one in particular.

"Happy New Year." The echoes of his voice bounced off the walls of the room until slowly they faded into nothing.

PRESENT DAY (20TH FEBRUARY 2050)

It wasn't every day at the Hong Kong International Airport that you saw a tired middle aged woman standing in arrivals hall A with eleven teenagers standing around her.

Then again, this wasn't just an average day for the Polaris Institute of Engineering and Science.

"Let's see," Zhen muttered under her breath, scanning through the list on her clipboard as the teenagers around her chatted amongst themselves. "The flight from Belarus has come already... We've had the flights from the US come in, same for India, Vietnam and the Philippines... The flight from Ukraine? Yes, Alexi's here... So are Dalila and Ryder... And Lilith just came, so who's missing?"
