Previously: "That night, Sanem had a premonition for the first time in almost a month."

--

"They are everywhere. They are here to hurt us. People are screaming," Sanem closed her eyes and her trembling hands quivered above her ears as she recalled the terrifying sounds. "They use big machines to cut down our trees and destroy our homes. I can't see their faces, but I hear their voices."

"Are they from here?"

Sanem nodded. "Some of them are. I feel like I know some of their voices but I can't figure out who they are just yet"

"Peki. Did you see anything else?"

Sanem thought for a couple of seconds before answering. "Evet. I don't know why but I see a dragon with a big mane, almost like a lion's, and blue cat-like eyes. There's something evil about it. It wants to destroy everything standing. It doesn't care about anyone."

She opened her eyes and locked them with her mentor's. Mihriban was studying her in silence, thinking about the deeper meaning that Sanem 's dream held. But the more she thought about it, the more it appeared to be the most obvious one.

"So Mahalle will be attacked."

"Attacked? What do you mean?"

"I can't think of anything else Sanem. Your dream is pretty clear to me: some people want to destroy us and our town. And it's possible that they will come not only from outside but also from inside. From our kind."

Sanem started fidgeting pacing up and down the floor of Mihriban's living room.

"But why?"

"People can find all kinds of reasons to do evil. But more times than not, it's about power, greed or money. Sometimes all three of them."

"What should we do?"

"Prepare as much as possible. But first you need to identify the voices that you thought you recognised. If we have to warn the inhabitants of Mahalle, we need to do it very carefully or those people can react and everything will get out of proportions."

"What about Can? They will kill him if they think he is remotely involved in this matter!"

"Do you feel that he is?"

Sanem thought for a minute. "Not directly but he may be to some extent."

"Then you have to warn him to be extra-careful while wandering around town. He has to be as discreet as possible."

Sanem nodded. She might have asked for a dream after weeks of aridity but she certainly wasn't prepared for that one. Why her? Why now? Why Mahalle of all cities? After decades of peace, why should their forest and city be targeted by ruthless people? So many questions were hustling in her head without answers.

She thanked Mihriban Abla and left her house hurriedly. She sought peace and quietness to think, but she also felt like she needed to stay close to town. Close to Can. So instead of going to her usual spot, she headed to the only place in the city where she could find some kind of peace and clear her head: the school.

When the children saw her they all ran towards her and hugged her, babbling excitedly about everything that she had missed since the last time she had come to read to them. She sat amongst them under the only tree that stood majestically in the middle of the schoolyard and they religiously listened as she started reading the first pages of the new book that they were studying.
