"Dad's on a hunting trip. And he hasn't been home in a couple of days."
I clutched Tom's arm, staring wide eyed at the screen as it cut to commercial after Sam told Jess to excuse him and Dean for a minute.
"How is... That's not... Why didn't you tell me he was hot?"
"Well, maybe if you gave Smallville a try when I told you to, you would have realized for yourself a lot sooner," Tom teased.
"Sh. It's starting back up," I waved a hand to get him to be quiet as Sam and Dean showed back up onscreen, heading down a staircase while they argued.
"I'm going to go make some more popcorn," Tom announced, grabbing the empty bowl.
I didn't acknowledge the statement, eyes glued to the screen. I could already tell that I was going to be a total Dean girl. Not only was Jensen super cute, but from the little I'd seen so far, Dean was an adorable badass. Sammy wasn't that bad himself, but there was just something about Dean that drew me in more than Sam did. The actor who played Sam, Jared Padalecki, actually had an uncredited role as a bully in Cheaper by the Dozen with Tom and I.
I fully intended to look up whatever information I could find on Jensen Ackles the first chance I got. I didn't want to do it now for fear of missing something important in the episode. Tom came back during the next commercial break and I quickly filled him in on what he'd missed.
"You know, I still talk to Jensen if you wanted me to set up a meeting between you two," Tom joked.
"Are you insane?! I can't meet him. He's way out of my league," I shook my head. "No, it's much better for him to not know who I am."
"But I'm pretty sure he's single. I mean, he did mention this one girl, Danneel Harris, but I don't know if they're dating or not. Come on, Scar, you have connections. I could hook you up."
"I'm not doing it, Thomas. I will watch the show and see him that way, but I'm not going to date him. Especially if you're involved. No, thank you."
Tom gave me a pouty face, but I refused to acknowledge him, fixing my attention back on the episode. The brothers were on a bridge talking to a couple of police officers about the recent disappearances they were looking into.
"Well that is exactly the type of crack police work I'd expect from you guys," Dean quipped.
Sam stomped on his foot, thanking the officers for their time and they started walking back to their car. Dean hit Sam upside the head and they started bickering with each other as two FBI agents and another local officer walked toward them.
"Look, Scar, I won't even tell him anything about you. It could be like a blind date situation. He's a really nice guy and I think you two would be awesome together," Tom tried again.
"I said no and I meant no, Thomas. Now stop talking. I'm trying to watch."
"Why were you never this interested in Smallville?"
"You said Jensen's just in season 4, right?"
"Y-yeah?"
"That's why I was never this interested in Smallville."
"But you didn't even know about him besides the times I've mentioned him before. This is your first time seeing him."
"Seriously, Tom, I'm trying to watch the show," I whined, eyes staying glued to the screen.
"You'll watch a new show for a guy you don't even know, but you won't even give a different show a chance that has your best friend as the lead."
"Hush."
"I'm Clark Kent. I'm a superhero. But do you care? No. You just want to watch two normal guys driving around in a car and chasing ghosts."
"Dean's a hero. He's like Batman."
"I thought you didn't like DC."
"No, I prefer Marvel, but I still watch some DC things. I like Batman."
"You've got to be kidding me," Tom groaned.
I smiled at him sweetly, watching Sam and Dean return to the bridge after dark to investigate Constance Welsh, the ghost girl.
"How can you choose Batman over Superman?" Tom demanded.
"Batman has the deep voice and the dark vigilante look."
"So?"
"Plus he's rich."
"So?"
"He's the freaking Dark Knight. He's awesome. He doesn't have any powers and still manages to save people and make a difference."
"Superman is way better."
"You're biased. You literally play Clark Kent."
"I'm not biased," Tom shook his head.
"Yes you are," I insisted and then paused, finally tearing my eyes away from the screen to look at him. "How did we end up in this argument?"
"Well, we started with you insisting you didn't want me to set you up with Jensen, and then you said Dean was like Batman which morphed into a Superman versus Batman debate."
"Huh," I hummed in response.
The rest of the episode passed in relative silence between us. I freaked out when Dean ran in after Sammy and saved him when Jess burned on the ceiling like Mary did at the beginning of the episode. The episode ended with the brothers by their car talking. Sam threw a shotgun into the hidden compartment in their trunk, then said "We got work to do." and that's how the episode ended.
"So, that's Supernatural," Tom was the first to speak as the credits rolled.
"That was amazing," I said, still in shock from the episode.
"You know, just say the word and I could totally just-"
"Let the Jensen thing go, Thomas. I have a little crush on Dean. That doesn't mean I want to date the actor who plays him."
"Keep telling yourself that."
I glared over at Tom who was smirking as he cleaned up the empty popcorn bowl and our drinks. He had been drinking beer, but made sure to give me soda. Ever since we learned I was a lightweight on my 21st birthday, I'd been very intentional about avoiding alcohol if I could help it.
"I don't want you to hook us up, Tom."
"I heard you, Scarlett. I won't bring you up when we talk, I promise."
"Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah."
