It was a chilly spring night. A cool breeze was gently blowing through (Y/N)'s hair as they were slowly walking on the mountain trail. They had just finished their daily training with Esidisi. And now they were looking for a quiet place to meditate a little before sunrise. And that was when, under the moonlight, they suddenly had no trouble perceiving the silhouette of their Master, perched on top of the cliff. He certainly did not want to be disturbed, as always. So (Y/N) started focusing on their breathing to make as little noise as possible, paying close attention to where they were stepping. But it did not take long for a twig to crack under their foot. It was inevitable. Without even turning to look at who was behind him, Kars clicked his tongue.
"(Y/N). Approach."
The young one shuddered. They knew they had to obey. And so, without another word, they approached cautiously. Kars barely lifted his head to shoot them a cold glance.
"Sit down."
Sit down? With him? It was an honor that (Y/N) could not refuse. After taking a deep breath to give themself courage, they settled down alongside their elder. Sitting cross-legged on the edge of the void, they could now admire the view beneath their feet. There were a bunch of humans going about their business. And (Y/N) smirked as they saw them swarming, several feet below. And that did not escape Kars' attention, as he frowned slightly.
"Look at how they crawl right under our feet. Don't you think they just look like miserable ants from up here?"
(Y/N) frowned slightly at that little remark, thinking of a decent answer that would not disappoint him. Slowly they shrugged.
"To be honest, humans fascinate me, Master Kars.
- Oh really?"
The tone of his voice indicated that it was best to be careful with what they were going to say next. (Y/N) swallowed, before nodding.
"I find their way of feeling sorry for themselves very... peculiar.
- Indeed. It is ridiculous to imagine being subjected to the misfortunes of a predetermined fate, when they are the only ones who can be blamed.
-... it is sad.
- Oh, sad?"
Kars finally looked away from the beautiful landscape before him to look directly at the one who he considered one of the most divine creatures. His purple eyes seemed to pierce through (Y/N) 's skull as they shuddered.
"Well, tell me, (Y/N). Would you by chance have any pity for these vile creatures?
- ... I repeat, Master Kars. I find them fascinating. Because even though they blame fate for the life they lead, they still keep on dreaming. Dreaming is beautiful, isn't it?"
Kars was speechless, examining the youngster beside him, who began to gaze up at the sky. And the Moon in particular, Moon which was shining and radiating above their heads. A small breeze blew into their hair and (Y/N) smiled slightly. That quickly disappeared when Kars added in a terribly cold voice:
"Humans only live miserably until one day they die just as miserably, never receiving the answers to their existential questions. The answers to their dreams, as you call them.
- I do not know what I would prefer between their life and mine.
- Watch your tongue, (Y/N). You are worth more than these filthy creatures."
A slight pinkish tint appeared on (Y/N)'s cheeks who slowly placed a lock of (H/C) hair behind their ear, a faint smile on their lips. Kars clicked his tongue once again, clearly upset by his subordinate's words. How could they really hesitate over such a thing? It was obvious, the Pillar Men were superior to any other species. Especially humans.
"I know I am worth a lot, Master Kars. But sometimes I wish I could dream too. Here I have this impression of having to remain... eternally bored.
- The person you are now is the person you will stay forever, stop talking nonsense.
- I do not know... I too would like to be able to feel all these emotions that bring life into their frail bodies..."
With their fingertips, they started gently brushing the blades of grass beside them, a sudden dreamy look in their eyes. And Kars found himself watching them. But he grimaced, rolling his eyes as he brought himself back to reality.
"It would be a terrible waste.
- Can I be honest with you?
- Sure. But spare me this pathetic speech, please.
- I too would like to be able to spend my life laughing, crying... loving, maybe. Humans may be miserable, I have no doubts. And they deserve to suffer for the woes caused to our Earth. But you do understand... maybe it is that fear of death that makes them so... interesting.
- I do no not know, and I really do not care. I just told you to spare me this pathetic speech.
- Open your eyes and look around. Look at them. Can you really say that you feel fulfilled in life?"
Kars frowned, and clenched his jaw. And with that sight, (Y/N) felt their muscles tighten. Perhaps they had talked too much. Perhaps they had gone too far. But they could not help it. They admired the man beside them more than anyone. But if only... If only Kars could feel something other than contempt and hatred. After a long moment when (Y/N) did not dare speak, Kars broke the silence in a deep voice. Deep and serious, but not cold.
"I admire you, (Y/N). Your skills have made you sensitive to the world around you, and that is for sure a great quality. But be careful. Your loving-kindness makes you weak. You will lose yourself. We do not want that to happen."
(Y/N) smiled a little more, their eyes riveted on the stars. The eldest Pillar Man had just paid them a compliment, well hidden behind all these warnings. And for the first time, the very first time in forever, they felt their heart warm in their chest. As if something frozen in stone suddenly awoke.
"Then maybe I would die happy!" they exclaimed.
And they received a little smack on the back of their head which quickly brought them back to reality. Immediately they bowed to apologize. But Kars put a hand on their shoulder. A faint smile on his lips.
"No one is stopping you from being happy to this day. Am I wrong?"
(Y/N) met his piercing purple gaze and was struck by shivers. His question did not help the strange feeling of warmth in their chest. They narrowed their eyes, really trying to come up with an honest answer. But they were not sure. Were they happy? No, rather... what made them happy? Who made them happy?
"I do not know if I am happy, Master Kars. But I know that staying by your side is the closest feeling to happiness."
Kars' eyes widened. And then he scoffed, unsure of what he had just heard. But he could not look away from the spark in (Y/N)'s (E/C) eyes as they kept smiling. Why did these damn humans always have to ruin everything? He growled, looking away. Then he stood up, his jaw clenched. And his fists just as clenched. And... with a heavy heart? What a strange feeling. (Y/N) watched him stand up, not really understanding this sudden decision. Until Kars whispered to them in an almost inaudible voice, without bothering to turn around to face them.
"If you really want to learn to love like these humans... I want to be the one you learn with."
And with that said... he disappeared into the shadows, leaving a cold silence behind him.
