Arabella walked downstairs to her common room exactly 5 minutes after midnight. The ticking sound of the grandfather clock in the Slytherin Common Room was followed by hiccups and sobs. She didn't need to venture further to know that it would be the first years crying after a hard first week.
She sighed and pulled her nightgown closer to her body. She walked further into the room shrouded in darkness to see a small group of First Years huddled together in front of the flickering, almost lifeless fire in the fire place.
"And then she called me names!" A girl with blonde hair and green eyes sobbed harder. She felt sorry for the kids. They were sheltered all their life and now they have to face all this just because they are Slytherins. She sighed softly. She did NOT like talking to others. Especially to kids. She found the whole conversation bit tiring.
"My mother didn't even send me a letter this whole week! And my cousin in Gryffindor even got presents from her! He's been rubbing it in my face all week!!" A boy with copper red hair and hazel eyes was playing with his hands and Arabella noticed how red and puffy all of them looked. They must have been up this whole time lamenting about their fate.
A quiet boy with blue eyes and brown hair in proper muggle pajamas was shivering in the cold yet he looked at the fire with such hatred Arabella found it hard to approach the kids. The last student, a girl, with brown hair and black eyes looked extremely similar to the boy who was staring at the fire. Must be twins, Arabella decided. She clutched her wand which was stashed in her green nightgown. She gently took it out and swirled it between her fingers.
She looked towards the kids and noticed the lack of green in their clothes. Almost all of them had various shades of red in them. "This place," The girl twin said, pointing at the common room in general, "feels like a prison." Arabella perked up at that.
"You know," Arabella said, walking out of the shadows, "I'm an expert at breaking out of prisons. Would you join me tonight? For a little adventure?"
To say the kids were spooked would be an understatement. They literally jumped out of their seats. And Arabella knew her bed hair did nothing to make them feel at ease. "Where to?" The red haired boy asked, keeping the fear out of his voice. The others also put up a brave facade and stood up tall, behind the red head. "The kitchen." Arabella smiled at them as she realized that they had what it took to make their house proud. Unlike the Gryffindors, the Slytherins were much more calculating and cunning.
Arabella walked towards their door and turned around, "Scared?" she asked in a taunting tone. "If the Professors-" the blonde haired girl started to ask. "Every Professor except Professor Snape would be asleep. He would be in his Study, researching. And sometimes, you may see Professor Dumbledore. But that's about it." Arabella turned around again. "Do you really not care about your house points?" The girl with brown hair asked. Arabella noticed how she said 'your' and not 'our'.
She shrugged and turned completely towards the door. "The door won't open till dawn. So, we use whatever is available to us. Now-" "Um.. If you mean Alohomora we already know about the spell." The boy with the brown hair informed her. Arabella grinned at them. "That is a popular misconception about the spell. Alohomara, the unlocking charm, is a charm that opens mechanical locks that are not protected by magic. And almost every important door at Hogwarts is protected by magic. Make a note to self, for future purposes." Arabella winked at them and tucked her wand into her night gown.
The kids worriedly looked at each other. Did she mean the part about the spell or the security of the doors? They wondered. "Now, you might be wondering, 'how will we be going out now?', right? Well, THAT is a Slytherin trick."
