I was back in the Villa, lights turned off, and sitting on the bed with my legs crossed in front of me as I told my best friend all that went down this evening.
"So you were vomiting?"
"More like spilling my guts out," I sighed.
"And you feel weak too?"
"Yes doctor Celine, I feel a little weak too." I mocked, throwing my head back against the sheets. Despite the fact that she had her plate full with her own problems, I knew I could count on Celine to dive right into her role of over-protective always worrying mama duck ready to jump on the next flight to Milan just to make sure I was okay.
"do you have a diagnosis doctor?" I continued after the brief pause on her end.
The sigh that filtered through the phone told me she was not going to say something I would like to hear and I had quite a good idea what she was about to say because I too had been questioning myself on the topic. "Actually, I do have a diagnosis, but I'm not sure you'd like it."
I exhaled through my nose, "since when did that stop you from telling me stuff."
The hesitancy in her tone when she spoke again confirmed my hunch, "I think you're pregnant."
If I had any strength left in me, I would have barked a loud peal of laughter, but I had drained all of my energy sitting on the bathroom floor and spewing what little food I had for dinner right into the toilet, with Lucas holding my hair up, "Um no I'm not. I'm on the pill remember?"
"I was too," she reminded me and I could almost hear her raise her brows. I half expected her to react differently to the reminder of her loss a few weeks ago, but to my surprise, it was like she was completely unaffected by talking about it. Not wanting to remind her of her sadness, I resisted the urge to ask if she was okay now.
"I'm not pregnant," I said, keeping my voice low. Lucas was downstairs speaking to the doctor. Yes, Doctor. Because although I had insisted on being fine and not in need of going to a hospital, Lucas would not be at ease until he knew I was okay. Which meant having a doctor come over to make sure I was. "It's just a bad food allergy. Garlic."
"Since when did you become allergic to Garlic."
"I've always been. It's usually mild, but for some reason today, it spiraled right out of control."
She whispered a drawn-out, "Pre-g-nant." into the phone and despite myself, I chuckled. Wrong choice because the ache in my stomach seemed to reverberate at the sound.
"Hey C, I know it's probably the worst timing, but how are you feeling now?" I asked carefully.
"I'm not the one reacting to Garlic right now," She chuckled, obviously forced and that was my cue that she was not yet ready to talk about it.
"You do know I'm here for you don't you?"
"You have been here for me for the last two weeks," she reminded me, "I'll be fine Bess. You and Alex have to take a chill pill. I won't break from this. I promise."
Heavy footsteps approached the room and I could tell they were Lucas's. He was the one man I knew who walked with so much authority. It radiated off him even when he was not here. "Okay. Bess, I gotta go, I'll talk to you tomorrow."
"Alright. Take care of yourself and I love you. Also..." she paused and gave a breathy sigh, before resuming, "I know you don't believe me right now, but please at least consider what I said and please be careful. I would hate to..." her voice cracked on the statement and I did not bother torturing her further by making her say the words.
