Thornkit scrambled out of his nest, suddenly remembering that today was his apprenticeship day. Stormkit let out a mrrow of laughter. "Really Thornkit?!" She was the one to first open her eyes, and now she was going to catch a mouse before him! He turned back to lay in his when he heard Amberstar yowl. Sighing, Thornkit joined his mother, Berrytail, and his father, Ripplepelt. Stormkit saw her brother's tail drooping, while her's was raised high. She nudged Thornkit with her nose. "Stormpaw! Stormpaw! Thornpaw! Thornpaw!" Stormpaw puffed out her chest happily. They were apprentices! She turned to Thornpaw, hoping that he was full of happiness like her. Thornpaw saw Stormpaw turn towards him. Ugh. What did she want now? Stormpaw nudged him with her nose. "Let's get some rest." To Thornpaw, resting sounded great. He nodded, hoping that she would leave him alone. Thornpaw slid into his nest, shuddering at the coldness of the moss. Slowly he slid into sleep.
"Hello, little one."
Thornpaw shot upward. Who had said that? "Hello?" He called out.
"Hello, Thornpaw. I was a clan cat once, like you. At first, I was not noticed, but that all changed."
Thornpaw tipped his head, confused. "What's your name?" he asked.
"My name is Finchpaw, but NEVER call me that."
Thornpaw nodded. Perhaps it was time to change.
