Prologue

(This is based off of the movie because I haven't yet gotten around to reading the book! Though I plan to :D By the way I do apologize if this prologue is bad--I'm multitasking. Writing this while watching the Hobbit to refresh my memory.)

Weakness. Weakness is the state or condition of lacking strength. It's the one thing you can't fight. The one thing you have little to no control over.
Everyone has a weakness.
In some it's more prominent.
In others it may take years to figure it out.
For men their weakness is foolishness, desperation, and a desire for mortal-like pleasures. For Dwarves it was greed.  A greed that ran so deep in their bones, it was nearly impossible to let go of. Dwarves also had a knack for holding grudges. The day you wrong a dwarf will probably be one of your last.
For elves, it was a selfishness and the infamous "fend for yourself" belief. Many elves found it hard to give aid to other suffering races because they think you've got to work for your success. It can't (or shouldn't) be given to you.
And last, hobbits--Hobbits find fear their biggest obstacle and weakness. They're afraid. Afraid to be abnormal. Afraid to step out of their comfort zone.  Afraid to be judged. And it takes a strong willed hobbit to overcome such a weakness as fear.

My name is Caitrin Took. When I was 7, a mere child, my parents were in a tragic accident while trying to explore the world outside of the Shire. We were never sure what happened to them exactly. A ranger had found my father's body apparently and he was dead. We could only assume the same fate had been doomed upon my mother as well.
Now an orphan, my closest relative was given the responsibility of becoming my guardian--if he'd accept. Bilbo Baggins, her uncle from her mother's side, had kindly accepted and has been raising me since my childhood. Recently, with my coming of age, I'd been allowed to move out any day now. But truthfully, I wasn't quite ready.
Nature doesn't actually care whether you're ready or not. And soon, I was about to learn this the hard way.
