Prompt 9: "I saved a piece for you."

Normally a work trip over two days wasn't much of a hassle. It was not preferable, but Logan would make do.

However, when said work trip ended the same day that was his son's eight birthday, he had some complaints. Especially when the traffic on the way back home was being more than difficult.

He really had tried to get out of the trip by all means possible. It was certainly not impossible to summarize all they had learnt over the past two days in a fairly short powerpoint and Logan very much loathed his boss for refusing to let him take the day off or at least simply work from the office instead of travelling to another town with all his coworkers.

Sure, he had video called his husband and son early in the morning and told Patton happy birthday and that he missed them and loved them and really wished he could be home in time for Patton's birthday party that he was having with friends from school, but a video call had nothing on actually being there properly to celebrate his sons birthday, his second one as a part of their family.

He could barely believe he was thinking such a thought, but he would much rather be at home, helping his husband keep track of five eight year olds on a sugar high, than sitting alone in the car and trying not to let the slow traffic get on his nerves.

The long line of cars that he was in the middle of slowed down until it stood still and Logan took a deep breath and reached out for his phone that was sitting in one of those holders that you stuck to the windshield, displaying a map that showed which ways he should take.

He clicked away the map app, going into contacts and called his husband as the line began to move the speed of an easily distracted eight year old that kept walking past dogs. It only took a moment for his husband to answer.

"Hey, L, what's up?" His husband's voice said over the sound of delighted eight year olds giggling.

"Hello, Virgil, just calling to let you know that the traffic is horrible and I will be even later than anticipated. I will likely not be back until Patton's party has ended." Logan said, sighing, although feeling a little better when the cars in front of him sped up slightly.

"Oh, that sucks. I'll only tell Patton if he asks, I don't want to make him sad. But you'll be home in time for dinner, right?" Virgil wondered, probably having walked into another room and closed the door as the noise of children quieted considerably.

"I certainly hope so. Otherwise I might as well leave the car and walk home, since it would go faster." He muttered and Virgil snorted.

"Well, always good with a plan B."

"Has Patton decided what he wants for dinner yet?" Logan wondered, thinking that if he had then maybe he could pick stuff up on the way home. Except if he wanted takeout, then waiting until later in the evening would be better. It was after all only a quarter past four, and Patton was likely not hungry after all the sweets he had likely had.

"No, but I figured that we'll ask him later tonight once he's hungry, if that's possible after how much cake he has eaten." Virgil said and Logan could swear his husband was rolling his eyes.

"I'm glad we made a big cake though, there's barely any left despite them eating pizza earlier. Anyway, I'm about to put a short movie on that they can watch until their parents come and pick them up, hopefully that should keep them a bit calm." Virgil said and Logan bit back a curse as the cars came to a stop again.
