Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, 1978, December

"See ya later Evans!" James told Lily as he gave her a quick kiss, and walked out of the common room. She had just finished studying and doing her homework with James before his Quidditch practice. She had recently started dating James Potter, and it really was a lot better than she expected it to be. She was quickly falling in love, and she had a love, yet hate relationship with that feeling towards Potter.

She waved to him as he walked away and grabbed her bag to head out as well to go see if Marlene and Dorcas wanted to hang out, when Sirius had walked into the common room, looking upset. Another thing that had changed, Sirius and Lily had started to get along. Ever since Sirius had allowed her to rant to him about Petunia and Sirius shared his similar problems, a bond had grown between them. She frowned, and set her bag back down. "Siri, what's wrong?" She asked him.

Sirius shot his head up, which had been looking down slightly, and pulled himself out of his thoughts. "Oh um, hey Evans. Didn't think anyone would be in here."

She looked at him and patted the couch. Sirius took a deep breath, then walked over. Sirius was able to lock up his emotions most of the time, but sometimes he was pretty bad at it and it showed. Some people could easily see right through him. Lily was one of those people.

Sirius sat down on the floor and fidgeted with his dog chain. "Yeah..?"

"Don't yeah me," Lily said as she picked up some of Sirius's hair and combed it with her fingers. "Your clearly upset, what's wrong?"

"It's... It's nothing," He said, sounding both stubborn and dejected.

"Well it's clearly not nothing." She said softly. Lily had known Sirius well enough to know that for him to open up, that would take time and patience. Sirius could rant and talk for hours when he wanted to, but his emotions and feelings had always seemed like something he wanted to figure out for himself, and expressing them were hard.

"I just.." He bit his lip, and thought about what to say.. "How did you know you liked James..?"

Lily raised a brow at this, and went a bit wide eyed. Out of all things, that wasn't one of the things she had expected him to say. She grabbed three pieces of his hair and started to half-up-half-down braid his hair as she talked, a habit of her since she usually braided the girls hair when talking to them. "Well.. I'm not 100% sure actually. I guess... I finally saw the side of him I'd been missing. After James started 'changing' and I got to know him, I saw he wasn't the arrogant toerag I thought he was fully. I think that's when I finally caught feelings, and it still took a bit of time for me to tell. I guess... It just took me seeing him in a new light from what I had previously had him labeled as for me to realize my feelings."  Sirius nodded slightly, but not much as he didn't want Lily's braid to go loose. "Why do you ask Siri?"

He started playing with his fingers again, and stayed quiet for what seemed like a lifetime. Lily took this as Sirius didn't wanna talk, and she started finishing off his braid when he suddenly said, "I think I'm in love Lily... and I don't know what to do about it.."

The words came out of his mouth, and he sounded unsure of what he had said as he spoke. She took a spare hair-tie from her wrist around the braid, and tighten it. "Well.. that's great Sirius! I'm happy for you..." She started saying, thinking encouragement was what he needed, but then she heard him sniffling and was shaking a bit. She got grabbing him by the shoulder, turned him around, and saw that his cheeks had a few tears falling down his face, and he was quite clearly trying his best to hold it all back.

"Oh Sirius," She said, frowning and hugging him around his shoulder, and letting him put his head on hers. "What's wrong? Why are you crying..?"

"I.. I don't know..." He choked, wiping his tears away. "I'm just... scared.. embarrassed maybe? I don't know.. This totally isn't punk rock of me.."

She raised another brow, and looked down at him. "Siri... who is it..? Is it Marlene? I know Mary was talking about you two and-"

"It's Remus.." He blurted out, not looking up at her as he moved his head away, and stood up, facing the wall in embarrassment and fear, scared for Lily's reaction.

Lily's eyes widened and she stared at Sirius for a few seconds, but shook it off. To be honest, she was shocked at how shocked she was. She mentally smacked herself for being so oblivious. Hearing Sirius say that and then thinking about Sirius and Remus.. it made perfect sense. She had closed her mouth, which had been hanging opened and stood up to, walking the few feet towards him, turning him around, and pulling him into a tight embrace.

Sirius tensed a bit, and wasn't sure how to react. "Y-Your not gonna judge me or anything?"

She pulled back a bit and looked at him. "Sirius.. you have no reason to be scared or ashamed, I think no less of you! Oh I'm such an idiot, how could I not have noticed!" She laughed a bit, hugging him tighter again. Sirius eventually hugged back, and cried for a bit. He had been so scared for what she might have said, and was just so relieved.

After awhile, they were sitting back on the couch, Sirius no longer crying, his head laying in Lily's lap, and Lily making small, yet not full braids with the pieces of hair she had left out of Sirius braid. Lily helped Sirius figure out his feelings for Remus, gave him some advice, even though she herself wasn't the best at it, had small talk, went on tangents about anything and everything, and bonded for the rest of the night till the other came back in.

Sirius and Lily became even closer after this, and started their own little 'tradition' of getting together on Fridays, one having one braid the other hair while the other rants about whatever today's topic is. Because of how much they ended up talking about boys or things similar, they named their meet ups 'Braids and Babes Friday.' Something they both always look forward to.
