"They're here."

AVERY SUMMERS was unforgettable. It wasn't the ginger hair or the glowing blue eyes, it was that look of grief that was permanently engraved on her face. Everywhere she went, eyes followed her, taunting her with what she had done. She was always on edge, but that was normal, no one was ever relaxed during the war. Though no one had blamed her for what had happened, the taunting from her mind convinced her of her place in the events. Guilt was an old friend to the young mutant, tagging along, invisible to everyone but her.

ALEXANDER SUMMERS was the hero. He spent his entire life trying to live up to the man he'd heard about in bedtime stories, the uncle he was named after. He stood up for his sister, he stood up for the younger students at the school, and he stood up for everyone. Alex was always the better of the two siblings, something Avery had always known. He was the embodiment of a classic superhero, kind, forgiving, discerning, strong, protective, and fair. The role model for all. The expectations for both siblings immediately went to him, and he accepted them with open arms. He was born to change the world, not die before he got the chance.

When he died, those expectations and responsibilities that Avery never had to worry about before, belonged to her. She accepted quickly with a saddened heart. She had to honor him somehow. That was how. It was the only way she knew how to. Honor Alex and distract herself from ever truly facing her emotions.

There was one thing about Avery Summers that everyone knew, she hated pity. She felt she didn't deserve it. In her eyes, she deserved the pain and remorse that plagued her days and the nightmares that wreaked havoc in her sleep. They were the consequences of a guilty conscience, the blame went to her and she was struck with results alongside it.

LOGAN HOWLETT was someone who the red-haired mutant knew she would forever be in debt. He was one of the only people who seemed to understand her, quickly taking her under his wing when her parents died, filling the hole that her father left the best he could. Teaching her everything she knew, protecting her, he knew her better than she knew herself. He was always there for her and she promised that no matter what happened, she would have to be there for him. She would sacrifice her life if it meant he lived, she knew he would do the same.

He didn't know that one day he might have to.

"They're here."

The second those words passed through John Proudstar's lips the head of a young red-haired girl shot up in a panic, abandoning her game of checkers with Clarice Ferguson. She quickly stood up and started moving in sync with the mutants surrounding her. She watched as Kitty Pryde quickly moved towards Lucas Bishop who quickly started running deeper into the building alongside Kitty, with a newly charged gun, courtesy of Roberto de Costa. Avery's head quickly shot up at the sound of cement hitting the ground, seeing a drill coming through the roof of the room. The girl quickly began to prepare herself for the battle that was sure to commence. Once she felt the familiar surge of power in her fingertips, she got to work.
