Now that Jules had what he needed to approach the Chantry, all that was left was to gain a little influence in order to actually get to the city of Val Royeaux. In order to do this, he decided to get rid of a few rifts in the area, along with setting up camps around the Hinterlands. The further his reach, the more people were aware of the Inquisition and its growing power.
His hand hurt every time he used the mark. As it flickered after closing a rift, he couldn't help but wince. When would he be able to take it off? Or was that something out of the question, considering how many rifts there were all over the world. There must be a way to close rifts without the mark, so that it's not needed, he thought, watching the slice on his palm begin to glow brighter as the sun set over the horizon. He leaned back in his seat, directing his gaze to the campfire across from him. Though he was so close to the flames, he could still see his breath mist in front of him each time he exhaled. Sitting down and not doing anything gives my mind time to wander off...
A terrifying prospect, if your mind was as filled with anxiety as his. In order to avoid having to think about pressing issues, he rose to his feet and joined Varric near his tent. The dwarf, who had previously been knelt beside his crossbow, rose to his feet and weary smiled. "So," he said, "now that Cassandra's off talking to the quartermaster... Are you holding up alright? I mean, you go from being the most wanted criminal in Thedas to joining the armies of the faithful. Most people would have to spread that out over more than one day."
Jules sighed and sat beside him. "None of this makes any sense to me. Giant magic explosion? Lost memories? Massive bad guy with a deep voice?" Jules kicked at the dirt, and Varric lowered himself to the ground. "Things used to be so simple. I haven't had an easy day since nearly a month before I left my clan."
Out of the darkness, Solas joined them around the fire. He asked, "So you left your clan?"
"Well..." Jules looked up at him. "Technically I was sent to the conclave - as a spy, meant to watch how the talks would go. I can't even remember what was said anymore, so what use that was... I hardly remember walking into the building..."
Solas tilted his head, and soon joined the young elf and Varric on the grassy patch beside their fire pit. "It's possible that whoever did this took your memories," Solas pointed out. "After all, you were physically in the fade. That would've attracted countless creatures with the power to steal memories."
"That... Doesn't make me feel any better!" Jules complained. He shot Solas a glare, then glanced towards his staff. "You're a mage. Can't you use magic or whatever to give me my memories back, or like... Pull them from the fade?"
Solas shook his head. "That would be far too dangerous. I'm afraid you'll have to regain your memories from whomever or whatever took them."Jules muttered some colorful words beneath his breath, and Solas and Varric exchanged looks. The Dwarf was the first to speak up, somewhat confused, "you don't act like any of the Dalish elves I've ever met. Which isn't saying much, actually, but still..."
