Amanda was exhausted. Just like the night before, she had gotten little to no sleep. And what was worse, she was going to have to do an extra hour of detention instead of working with Mark. At least she had studied for his quiz the night before. The answers came easy for her, but then again, she really had just reviewed stuff that she already knew. She had already learned about ancient Egyptian mythology from her uncle.

There were twenty questions in all. And none of them were multiple choice, nor were there any true or false. You either knew the correct answer, or you didn't. There was no possibility of guessing which one was the correct answer. But it didn't matter, Amanda was still able to breeze through it. But she was stunned by the final question.

"What was the ancient Egyptian word for love?"

Mer Ek!  The only reason she even bothered to look up that word was because it is what her dream lover had called her last night. So why was it on the quiz? Was her dream lover reaching out to her?  No, that was crazy. Maybe she was just tired and coming up with strange theories, or maybe a part of her wished that her encounter had been with Mark.

"Amanda?" she heard Mark say. Lost in her thoughts, his voice snapped her out of it.

The entire class began to laugh, as Amanda became embarrassed. She could feel her face turning bright red.  She felt meek, as all she wanted to do was slump down into her seat. She began to stutter, as she nervously responded. "Y-yes, Mr. Jacobson?"

"I asked if you knew the name of the Egyptian god of the underworld." He replied. "Are you okay?"

Oh great! Not only was she not going to be able to work with him on his book after school, but now he was the one who caught her daydreaming in class. Amanda immediately sat up, hoping to save face. "I'm fine, I guess I was still thinking about the quiz and zoned out a bit. I apologize. But to answer your first question, his name was Anubis. He also took the form of a jackal."

Mark just looked at her with a coy smile, as he folded his arms. "Good save Miss Addington."

Amanda breathed a sigh of relief as Mark continued to lecture on the Egyptian gods. "Now then, Anubis had a brother named Wepwawet, who took the form of a wolf. With his brother being the god of the underworld, Mr. Wepwawet was essentially the equivalent of the grim reaper or the Angel of Death.  Like many of the gods and goddesses, he had his own cult. Some believe that his followers were so loyal, that they too took the form of the wolf. I guess you might call them werewolves."

Carla's hand immediately shot up, as Mark soon pointed to her. "Yes, Miss Alvarez?"

"I thought that werewolves were associated with the Greek moon goddess, Selene." After Carla had asked her question, the whole class looked at Mark. He cupped his own chin and began to laugh.

"I think that some of you have been reading too many supernatural romance novels. But all kidding aside, that is actually an excellent question. That is a topic for which I will go into more detail when we start on Greek mythology in the next quarter. The truth is, that many mythologies have their own versions of different legends and the origins of supernatural beings. In a way, we are both right."

Remembering the panther from her dream, Amanda's hand immediately shot up into the air. Mark then smiled and pointed at her. "Yes Miss Addington?"

"I was wondering, since a group of werewolves came from Wepawet's followers, did any other Egyptian deities have cult followers that could transform into the same animal as the deity?  I mean have there ever been any stories of were-panthers?"
