The rest of the school day passed as a blur. In addition, after Tris went home, she phoned Newt.
“What’s up” she asked.
“Nothing much. My mums lecturing me about how to behave.” Moreover, in the background, Tris could hear Newts mum say “Watch your words. I’m warning you.” Newt chuckled.
“Ha-ha. You didn’t do much to be honest. It was funny though. I bet Astrid is crying now, damaging those pretty cheeks. Poor baby.”
“Yeah...”
“Hmmmm”
“Do you, Shelly and Sam want to come over? Saturday of course. ”
“That’d be great. I’ll spread the news. Goodnight, Newt.”
“Goodnight, Tris.” After that, she turned around to find her mum standing with her hands on her hips.
“So, who was that?”
“My friend Newt.”
“Oh really? I just got a letter today saying how late you were for fourth period. 25 minutes late! That is just ridiculous, Tris.”
“It’s not my fault, though. There was this fight in the canteen, and I…”
“You what? Waited there to watch it?”
“Ummm…..”
“I’m guessing Sam was part of the fight?”
“Err, yeah, she was. But it wasn’t her fault.” Tris admitted. Thankfully, her mum appeared to be finished, so Tris said goodnight and went upstairs before her mum could protest. She could not believe that she just had a lecture.
“God, Newt! Talk about lectures!” she muttered to herself before falling asleep in her school clothes.
On Friday morning, Shelly, Tris, Newt and Sam were all making plans for tomorrow.
“So…were going to yours straight after school?” Shelly asked Newt.
“Not STRAIGHT after because I’ve got detention, remember.”
“We’ll stay at school with you. But not in detention, of course.” Tris suggested.
“Yeah, ok. But my detention is an hour, so are you sure you guys want to stay in school?” Newt shifted nervously, but they all smiled at him and simply said “Yeah”.
