What You Can't See

Chapter 3

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When Pale-Kit awoke, he was in the medicine den, Rabbit-Skip was sitting next to him, looking disappointed. Willow-Sky, the medicine cat, was muttering about how everytime there's kits, at least one of them does this. Pale-Kit thought he saw someone next to his mother, also gazing at him, but he didn't keep his eyes open enough to tell and passed out again. By the time he awoke again, Willow-Sky was nudging him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“You've rested enough. Get up.” They mewed with annoyance.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Where's Rabbit-Skip?” Pale-Kit mewed, still sounding tired.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“I told her to leave to look after Thrush-Kit and Oak-Kit. You should go see them in the nursery. I'm sure they're very worried about you.” Willow-Sky's voice softened, “There's a reason kits aren't supposed to leave the camp. You're lucky a fox didn't find you.” Willow-Sky commented.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀That reminded Pale-Kit of the fox that did see him. He had outrun it though.. or more accurately, it seemed frightened of the twoleg den. And then he thought to look at the figure he saw in the corner of his eye while talking to Willow-Sky, and he doing himself back, fur fluffing up and back arched. It was that same stupid fox that chased him! Why did they let it in the camp?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Fox!” Pale-Kit cried.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Yes. But there's no need to worry. There aren't any in the camp.” Willow-Sky tried to assure Pale-Kit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“There's a fox right there!” Pale-Kit scrambled behind Willow-Sky to hide, but Willow-Sky wouldn't let him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Very funny, Pale-Kit, very funny. Go back to your mother and siblings.” Willow-Sky meowed sarcastically, nudging Pale-Kit once again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“It's right there!” Pale-Kit continued to screech, at this point, Torn-Star had heard the commotion and wanted to figure out what was going on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“There's nothing there.” Willow-Sky meowed flatly, their patience running thin.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Why can't you see them too?” Pale-Kit wailed, panicking now. Torn-Star gestured for Willow-Sky to move so he could sit by him.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“What are you seeing?” Torn-Star asked gently.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“A fox! But Willow-Sky says they can't see them! But it's right there!” Pale-Kit gestured with a paw towards the fox, which seemed to excite it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“There's nothing there.” Torn-Star mewed, then looked up at Willow-Sky for an explanation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“There are no head injuries. I checked. He started crying like that when I told him he was lucky a fox didn't find him.” Willow-Sky explained, still sounding annoyed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Pale-Kit, you have such a wild imagination. I promise it's okay. Do you want me to walk you out?” Torn-Star offered, and Pale-Kit complied, feeling slightly safer walking beside the larger cat. The fox followed, but seemed wary of the large cat. As they should. Pale-Kit thought, as he noticed yet again that it wasn't much larger than himself, smaller than any of the warriors. From the stories he heard, they were much bigger. However, this somehow just made him more uncomfortable.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀“Pale-Kit!” Rabbit-Skip meowed loudly, waking both Oak-Kit and Thrush-Kit up. She still looked disappointed, but also relieved. Pale-Kit nervously walked over to his mother and curled up next to his siblings. The small fox followed, and looked as if it was attempting to snuggle in as well. Yet no one acknowledged it. Only Pale-Kit seemed to notice it's presence and warm body. It wasn't attacking, and surely if it was something harmful, the other members of his clan would've done something about it. So, reluctantly, he kept quiet about their presence and just allowed himself to be reunited with his family. Torn-Star then left the nursery to finish whatever else, he, as a leader, needed to do in the day.
