Chapter 4: Changing Winds

Y/N sits down gracefully at the Cullens' table.
"Thank you for joining us for dinner, Y/N. I'm sorry we only have 3 pounds of cheese to feed you." Carlisle says, sitting down.
    "Won't you eat with me?"
"We've eaten already. Don't worry yourself." Y/N begins to feast on raw parmesan wheels with a fork and knife.
"So, Y/N, have you heard of the devil's work that has been taking place here in Roxbury?"
"Huh?" she says, her mouth full of cheese.
"That girl Cheryl has inflicted our daughter Alice. She is resting in her room, trying to recover from the trauma that evil woman has caused.
    "Really? Cheryl seemed so sweet.."
"Are you suggesting we would lie about something this severe?! Our child struggles to breathe. That evil WHORE"
    "No..no.. of course not... lol."
"Lol?! Is this a laughing matter, Ms. Y/N?" Rosalie says, raising an eyebrow.
"No, no, sorry. It's a very serious matter, not a lol matter at all."
Someone knocks loudly on the door.
"I'll get it," says Edward. He swings the door open to find John Proctor standing there, devilishly masculine.
"Young Cullen, I have to come to fetch Y/N."
"Ugh. Come in, Goodman Proctor." Proctor glances down at Y/N in front of the cheese.
"Wait... how did you afford three whole pounds of cheese?!"
"The magnitude of the wind has no effect on its direction, Proctor. Everyone must understand this."
"Cullen boy, your silly, childish games won't phase me."
"Children may laugh and play, but the winds of change are only a moment away."
"Cullen- wait that was pretty you should write that one down."
"Aw shucks, I've been working on my poetry." His eyes darken. "Don't ask questions about the cheese ever again, it's an incredible personal story. We are sharing a part of our family here Proctor"
"Y/N is needed at the courthouse. They must testify on the character of Cheryl Blossom, and little Eddie boy, be careful about the cheese; accusations are flying."
"Proctor, that cheese tells me the ways of the world; when the wind will change directions. I will not hide its knowledge from the world. I could more easily hide the love in my heart for... nevermind" Edward says with a soft smile. John takes Y/N's arm sharply, like the devilishly bad boy he is.
"Come on, Y/N, we need to go. We must prepare to defend Cheryl from her fate. The trial will begin in 3 hours." He walks up the stairs to Alice's room and grabs her by the collar, sharply dragging her out of the house.
"You must fix your mistakes now, Alice. Cheryl does not deserve this fate, no matter how much gain you get from this."
Alice cries. "I'll be there, Proctor, with enough fear in my heart to convict 10 men."

...
"SILENCE!" Reverend Hale shouts into the crowd.
Y/N sits with Alice and Bella at the front of the courtroom, across the panel of judges sits Cheryl- pale, terrified, and chained to a chair.
"The court will now begin. Alice, please step forward and explain why we are here today" he continues.
Alice shakily stands up "well.. You see.. I was on the outskirts of town- right where the forest meets the lumber farms, and i saw her- *she points to Cheryl* She was dancing around a cauldron, and.. and there was a bloody knife in her hand. I ran to the center of town as fast as i could- you see she saw me at the edge of the woods. I was so scared. I ran back to the church- for God! God can protect me here. But Cheryl- she followed me and started murmuring. I couldn't hear what she was saying, you see. But I started to feel dizzy. I stumbled on to the church steps and my hero- the Reverend he came to my aide."
"Thank you Alice, please take a seat and rest. Next we have Y/N, please take a stand and tell us about your relationship with Cheryl"
"I-I don't know her well, she seems very sweet and I don't think she would do this, but I'm just a small and innocent and weakly little lamb who knows nothing so I couldn't say."
"Y/N... it's okay, you just don't know. Don't stress your adorable little lamb weak small body out." Edward says
"Nonsense, the girl must testify!" Carlisle demands.
"I- I can testify, I promise. Just please don't hurt me"
"Don't draw suspicion on yourself girly. Then you'll be fine" whispers Alice loudly from the witness stand.
John Proctor stands from his seat in the jury.
"This is a gross misuse of justice, Hale, Y/N cannot testify for or against Cheryl, she wasn't in the forest earlier this afternoon!"
"She is a character witness Proctor. She is new to this town, no loyalties. The perfect witness to the impression and characters of everyone here."
"She has been here for a few days! She knows nothing about character, Hale!"
"Even the most experienced mushroom hunter cannot tell a poisonous brown cap from a delicious brown cap by sight alone, can he Proctor? Let her speak." Edward says ominously.
"Ooh that was a good one, Eddie boy, write that one down." Proctor says, and Edward nods and starts scribbling furiously.
"Owobaosjbfuabspaoidhaudbf." Alice screeches as Y/N opens her mouth.
"What is going on here?" Carlisle asks. "Alice, I lovingly ask that you never verbally keysmash again."
"I am sorry father, it is hard to hear someone so dumb and annoying speak" Alice replies
"Clearly the witness is in need of comforting," says Hale, "Alice, please come up to the judge's stand."
She walks up to the judges stand and pretends to fall on top of his lap "oh no I'm so sorry, it's so hard for me to be in a room with Cheryl"
"I know, precious, you feel faint. Just lie here and rest."
"You're so sweet, Hale, my love."
    "THIS IS RIGGED!" Cheryl screams.
"The court will now take a recess, lol" Hale smirks.
"This is not a lol matter, Hale. This is a gross miscarriage of justice." Proctor stands and exits the church. The crowd gasps exasperatedly and sadly; and promptly starts crying.
"I said the court will take a recess! Get out!" Hale screams.
