the handmaiden's tale / chapter eleven

Long ago, when European royals grew bored with palace balls, they took a page from the peons and added some pageantry. Couture and canapé are just another Saturday night — until you add a mask. But preparing for a ball is an event in itself, which is why queens invented handmaidens.

And word has it Princess M is looking for her very own Prince Charming tonight. Too bad it won't be neither Playboy Bass or Sweetheart Archibald. Maybe Lonely boy's free tonight? Unless Serena snatches him off first... or someone else. We'll just have to see it play out, now won't we?

"A ball?" Dan asked, his face expressing confusion.

Rufus answered in an instant while mixing a batch of waffles. "Haven't you heard, your sister's Cinderella."

"And let me guess. Blair Waldorf is your wicked stepsister."

"I heard Blair and a ball, that shouldn't be good." Marley stepped out of the bathroom, hair now clipped back.

"Morning." They said simultaneously as they turned their heads in her direction.

"Good morning." She smiled, getting a scent of the breakfast Rufus was about to make. "Mhm, Waffles?"

"Oh you know, just your favorite." Rufus smiled at the girl, stirring the batch a little more.

"Well, anyways..." Jenny casually shifted the conversation, seemingly annoyed but going back to what they were talking about before she came in. "Blair may have asked me to do a few things, but I'm happy to help out."

"And if she happens to help you out with an invite and an outfit?" Rufus looked over at her daughter with a 'you know better than that' look.

Jenny shrugged her shoulders. "Then it'll all be worth it."

"Uh, no it won't." Marley's words caught them all by surprise. She started making her way next to Jenny as she shook her head. "You know damn well she's just using you. When she's done with you, she'll

"Just because she did that with you, doesn't mean she'll do that with me." Jenny snapped. "And it's honestly none of your business, Marley."

Both Rufus and Dan looked at each other before stepping in. "Jen, that's not nice."

Marley wasn't too bothered by her words, after all she knew Jenny would regret it in a couple of weeks — if she even made it that far.

"Alright, I think it's best you get going to.." Dan stopped mid sentence, gesturing with his hands at the bags on the counter. "... whatever that is."
