Hazel Aria Peters

My best friend, Avery, and I walk into the front doors of our school along with the sea of students.

"First day of junior year! So excited! In two years we will be in college. It seems so far, yet so close," Avery says. In the halls, girls are hugging each other claiming they haven't seen each other in forever even though I'm sure they hung out yesterday. Scared freshmen looking for their classes. Seniors in their last year of high school. Next year, that'll be us.

"Yeah. I still remember the first time we met like it was just yesterday," I respond. Avery had just arrived to town in the middle of the school year. Not the best time to switch schools. Everybody already has their group of friends. I was a loner back then. I guess I still am. I have plenty of friends, but I don't need as much socialization. Avery was lonely and I was determined to make a friend. Since she was new, she was shy. At lunch she sat alone so I decided to sit next to her. Best decision of my life. We talked and started sitting together everyday after that. We became best friends.

My only other friend then was Connor. He didn't attend the same school as me until middle school because he was home schooled all throughout elementary. When Avery met him, they became friends. She started having a crush on him freshmen year of high school.

We were in my bedroom when she said, "Hazel? I need to tell you something. But you can't tell a soul!"

"Okay. What's going on."

"Promise you won't tell anybody."

"I promise." I had said.

"I have a crush on... Connor."

She didn't know about my crush on him. I hadn't told anybody. Not even my best friend. I started liking Connor when I was in elementary school, before I even met Avery. I'd told her that I had a crush on this guy, but I'd never said a name. I think she'd forgotten all about him when I stopped mentioning him after she confessed she liked him.

"What classes do you think Connor has?" Avery asks me.

"Why don't you go up to him and ask him? Why didn't you just text him?"

"I don't want to seem desperate," she shrugs.

"How is that desperate?"

"I don't know. I- there he is. Hey, Connor!"

"Hey." Connor walks towards us. He looks hot today. He always does. He looks like he belongs in a magazine.

"What classes do you have, Connor?" I ask him. I know Avery is dying to ask him.

He looks at his schedule where his classes are written down. "Algebra II, English III, American History, Drawing III, AP. Chemistry, Strength Training and Conditioning, and Graphic Design III. What about you guys?"

Avery reads her schedule, "English III, Gen. Chemistry, American History, Youth Entrepreneurs 1, Physical Education, Algebra II, and French III."

"You still haven't taken P.E.?" Connor asks.

"I hate P.E.. But I didn't want to leave it until senior year either so I'm taking it this year. Why haven't you taken it either!"

"What are your classes Hazel?" He asks me ignoring Avery's question.

"Algebra II, Basic Photography, American History, A.P. Language, A.P. Chemistry, Design & Animation, and Graphic Design III."

"Brainiac." Avery says with a smile.

"Why do you have 3 electives?" Connor asks.

"Because unlike the two of you, I've already taken the necessary P.E. classes."

"Wait. I just realized something. I only have one class with both of you! American History. You guys have four classes together. Four! I'm going to be a loner," Avery complains with a horrified look on her face.

"You have a lot of friends, Avery."

I hear the warning bell ring through the halls. "We've got to get to class. Don't want to be tardy to class on the first day of school, do we?"

Connor and I head towards our class while Avery heads to English.

"It's funny, you know."

I hear Caleb talk suddenly. "What is?"

"Last year, you and Avery had five classes together. I'm sure you would have had all of them together of it weren't for that smart brain of yours getting you into more advance classes. Now you guys have just one."

"I guess it is."

We walk into our class and see the teacher, Mr. Edwards, sitting at his desk. I sit at the very back corner, like always. Connor sits to me left. I can't help but keep glancing at him from time to time.
