Written Statement:
The idea for this story came and hit me out of nowhere one day, and I loved it. A lonely boy walking through a city in the middle of the night gives off a mood that shows a bit of how a lonely person feels inside. The fact that a person can feel so lonely and lost in the middle of a dark metropolis is relatable; it is something that I believe many people can understand, for being surrounded by a materialistic society can’t ensure that a person will feel popular. Loneliness is something that everyone has felt before in their life, and I thought that putting this emotion in my piece would help others to understand it. I also have a fondness for rain; I love how it is something that can feel depressing, but also feel like rebirth. Mixing these two ideas together, I came up with my story setting and plot; imagining myself in my main character’s shoes helped me to visualize and feel exactly how my main character would in that kind of environment.
I hope that the undercurrent of the importance of sincerity was conveyed to the readers of my piece; honesty, truthfulness, and genuineness are solutions to problems we all experience in our lifetimes, including the problems my main character faced. Though not said outright, Death was advising the main character to live his one and only life sincerely, before it would end with him regretting his actions. The irony of Death helping a boy into rebirth is something I found very interesting (and slightly amusing) to put into this story.
Death went forward and visited the main character just because of its knowledge of past people and how sincerity could have helped them live their lives better. This, I feel, is what puts a lot of emphasis on the value of sincerity in my piece. The serious and dark presence of Death puts a lot of weight on the importance of sincerity in one’s life, and helps the readers to understand its significance. It also shows how life is too short to be dealing with feigned actions and emotions.
