He says that it is already getting dark. We spend at least two hours talking about my book, drifting off to other subjects and laughing. It has been a really long time since I felt so light and relaxed. But the reality is that it is a race weekend so he is working. Speaking off, I also have work to do. In stress of all the work that is waiting for me still I jump up to leave to my camper.
"What is wrong?" he asks, surprisingly. "Oh nothing, I just remembered that I still have a lot of work to do," I reply.
"Oh, I'm sorry to have bothered you," he replies as he looks to his feet. "No, I didn't mean it like that. I really enjoyed hanging out with you, thank you for that. But now I really have to go," I tell him as I initiate to start walking towards the reception of the campsite. "Let me walk you home then," he says while he follows me. I tell him that is not necessary because I am staying on this campsite. He stops walking. "Really?" he asks. "I am staying on this campsite too" I stop walking and slightly turn towards him. We smile at each other. He starts walking again so I walk next to him. Our hands slightly brush against each other at every step. It gives me little tingles in my stomach.
"This is me," he says. We stopped at an exceptionally large camper. It is more a house than a camper. I try not show my real feelings. "It is big, I know. May it comfort you; it is not my camper. I am staying here with my parents and my sister," he speaks. I ask him where he usually stays. "Usually, I stay in a hotel with the team. But my family came here to watch me and to celebrate their summer vacation so I am staying with them for now," he explains. "That is nice. Well, enjoy your stay and good luck tomorrow and Sunday," I say, trying to brush him off. He thanks me and starts walking to the front door of the camper so I continue my way to my camper.
After a minute or two I feel a hand on my shoulder. As I turn around, I see George standing there out of breath. Caught by surprise, I wait until he caught enough breath to talk. "Sorry, I had to come back to ask for your phone number in case I would never see you again," he hands me a pink memo and a pen. I write down my phone number and my name and give it back to him. "Thank you, please let me know when you have some more time to hang out with me," he replies. I smile at him "Well you have my number so it makes more sense it you text me when you have time to hang out." "Yes, you are probably right," he agrees. "Well good night then," I say as I turn around and start walking again. I hear him mumble a soft good night as he drifts off.
First thing I do when I arrive in my camper is hang the curtains as it is getting dark. I only leave off the one for the front door. Next, I take out my laptop to work for an hour. When my belly is starting to make hungry sounds, I decide to take a break to cook. Today's menu is soba noodles with Thai vegetables, soja sauce and a baked egg on top. When I finished my meal, I do the dishes and go for a shower. Back at the camper I get in my comfy clothes and decide to work a bit more outside with a cup of tea.
I am so focussed on my work that I did not even hear him coming until he stands next to my chair. He gently pokes my arm and says hi in a very shy way. "Hey you found me," I reply. "Yes, I found you," he smiles. "Quite a beast you have here" he says pointing at my bright orange Mercedes truck. Smiling I stand up. "She is my pride. My father bought it and we are making a camper out of it together. I got my truck license to be able to drive in it too. Unfortunately, he could not come this weekend. Do you want some tea?" I ask him. He nods so I go in the camper to warm some more tea water. "I hope you are not such an Englishman who has to drink tea with sugar and milk because I do not have all that," I shout from inside to outside. I can hear him chuckle softly.
