Gwen
I’m done fixing my things when my best friend text me. I went to my drawer to get my phone.
Hazel: Where are you?
Me: I’m about to go now.
Hazel: I’ll meet you at the bridge, in front of Cold Stone. You treat me, you’re late.
Me: That’s unfair! I have to do some errands!
Hazel: GO NOW!
I went straight downstairs and open some lights in our apartment then left. The pavement is still wet from the rain earlier. I can still feel the breeze of the air and I wonder why Hazel want to eat ice cream she never eat ice cream unless something happened with her date earlier. S***! I ran until I lose all the air inside me.
“I ran as fast as I can. What happened to you? I mean you never eat ice cream except when you are stressed or something happen to your perfect day. Tell me.” I said catching up my breath.
“Okay. Breathe in, breathe out. God, you should have taken a cab or something. And yeah something happened.” she admitted.
We went inside the ice cream parlor and went to our usual seats, far back beside the Audrey Hepburn portrait on the wall. I keep on wondering why people remember her as the pretty actress and not her amazing works and contribute in our world.
“Stop staring at my portrait!” Hazel said smiling.
“Shut up and order. Mine is usual.” I said giving her the money and watch her as she went to the counter and order for us.
I stared at the light of the carnival across the bridge. The last time I went to a carnival was three years I ago before my sister left for Oxford. I miss her so much.
“I can’t believe it. Why did it happen tonight? I mean why would it ever happen to me? This is so frustrating!” Hazel said when she returned from the counter with our ice cream. I went and grab the cookies ‘n’ cream and she got the strawberry ‘n’ cream.
“Stop and tell me everything from the beginning.” I said and ate a spoonful of ice cream.
“So as you know, Jake went to pick me up at the apartment earlier today to have lunch with me then we went to see a movie. Everything is going perfectly then it happened.”
“Happened? What do you mean ‘happened’?”
“Nothing happened between us, okay maybe there is but, he is forcing me to do this.” she says looking down at her ice cream.
“Then what did you do?” I ask her.
“I pushed him away and told him that I can’t do it because I’m not married at him yet. I don’t want to do the ‘thing’ until I’m married to the right person.” she answered.
“Then he broke up with you?”
“That’s why I talk to you every time I have problems. You’re so good at it. I mean you knew what happened next.”
“Ah that’s sweet of you, I feel I’m really such a good friend right now,” I said then added. “He broke up with you on your first date huh. That’s nice.” I said reaching for her hand.
“He’s a jerk.” Then she laughs really hard.
“What’s funny?” I ask her.
“Night Changes is on the background. Such a perfect song for me right now.” she answer then laughs again.
