The next day, Margarita was all dressed for her first day at her new school. She opened her jewelry box and pulled out her mother's necklace, which had a daisy flower and two green beads on each side. She also had daisy stud earrings to match the necklace. Suddenly, there was a knock on her door. "Entra," she called.
In entered Nancy. "Good morning, dear," she smiled. "Are you ready for your first day of school in the United States?"
"As I'll ever be, Nancy," Margarita said. But she was feeling rather nervous.
"A little nervous?" Nancy guessed.
"I suppose," Margarita shrugged. "Maybe a little music will help." She opened the music box and listened to the song.
"That's beautiful," Nancy smiled. "What's that song called?"
Little did Nancy and Margarita know that Stephanie had passed by, and she couldn't help spying. Then she noticed how beautifully dressed Margarita was.
"Valiente," Margarita answered her stepmother's question. "It's a Mexican classic that my mother used to sing to me. Now whenever I listen to this music box, it sounds like she's still here, singing to me." Then she hummed a little bit of the song.
"Well, I'm sure she's just where you get your voice from," Nancy smiled.
"Thank you," Margarita smiled back.
Stephanie was feeling a little jealous of Margarita. Not only was she very beautiful, but it sounded like she had a great set of pipes. Stephanie just scoffed and went on her way.
Later, the whole family drove to Briarwood High School. Jesus had just gotten a job as a teacher at the local university, so he came in a different vehicle because he wanted to wish his daughter good luck on her first day at a USA school.
"Okay, here we are," Jesus smiled, hugging both his daughters. Then he gave Margarita a kiss. "Buena suerte, mi nena. You have your belt pack and injector?"
"Sí, Papá," Margarita nodded.
"Remember to give this to the nurse, okay?" Nancy asked, giving her stepdaughter a note.
"Okay, Nancy," Margarita nodded.
"Have a good day, girls," Jacob smiled.
"Okay," the sisters chorused. They went off into the building.
"So, Margarita, this is Briarwood Academy," Stephanie said. "There's a lot you need to learn to fit in at this school, like that smell." She sniffed the air. "Do you know what that smell is?"
Margarita also smelled the air, and she let out a sneeze. "The smell of perfume?" she guessed.
"No, it's the scent of total and extreme popularity," Stephanie told her. "You see that? You may be in high school, but you really need to learn more."
