As the rays of the sun passed through my curtains, I lazily got up and out of bed thinking to myself that this is the day. This is the day that I decide to run away and get my own freedom.
Then a knock comes at my door.
"Come in!" I said. Portia came in swiftly with her annoying yet beaming smile. "Excuse me Madam, but your mother requests for your presence at the dining room." I turned to my side to face her.
"Whatever" I mumbled against the sheets.
"Certainly Madam." she said politely. I had a lot in my mind, I shouldn't have snapped at Portia like that.
After I heard the door close, I quickly got up and took a shower. Portia was from one of the few families that my parents loaned money to and this was their way of payment, to serve the Carlton residence. Her blonde hair was done neatly into a bun and she was always courteous to me even though we were almost the same age. I remember my parents scolded me whenever I would sneak out of the mansion and into their little barn to play with her when we were little kids. But I guess I really have lost track of time and forgot how we used to be.
I noticed the brown duffle bag that I prepared last night underneath my bed. Did I really want to do this? Was I ready to leave the only way of life that I know for good? But thinking about the life I'll have outside the gates, this made me hungry for the world that holds so much more for me. I then tossed my bag down the balcony behind the bushes. "No looking back now Macy." I thought to myself.
"Macy darling, will you be joining us?" the intercom interrupting my reverie.
"Yeah, I'll be there in a minute." I said over the intercom.
I entered the dining room and the usual breakfast banquet is served on the long oakwood table. My mother sat at the end of the table and gestured me to come sit with her.
"Macy, I see your not clearly dressed for our meal, again." she says looking at me from head to toe. I took a quick analysis of my ripped grey jeans and my black tanktop, what was her problem? Taking a seat, I ate as fast as I could before-
"Sweetheart, please don't take this the wrong way, but we want what's best for you." she says to me with pleading eyes.
"By what? By sending me overseas and being the least of your worries?!" I said at a louder tone.
"That's not what we mean." She didn't bother to argue any further, considering that this was the hundredth time that we were fighting about this. I didn't agree to the whole thing. They were sending me away to get rid off me. Their own daughter. And this was one of the reasons why I wanted to leave so bad. I stood up the table and left, not even turning to look at my mother's reaction.
"I'm done talking about this. You keep convincing me, then I'll just keep on saying no." I said mockingly
"Ever since your brother died, you've done nothing but go against us." She did not just bring that up.
"Don't you dare bring Kevin into this." I said threatening through every word
"Why can't you just be the obedient daughter that we want you to be?" She stressed
"Because you'll never be the parents that would see me as your daughter" I held back the tears "Because I wish I didn't have you guys as parents."
As I was running back to my room, I heard faint voices in the study and I caught sight of my dad with a few of his business partners.
"So how are the shippings to Canada? Have they settled in?" a man in a grey Peticoat asks.
"They passed through the checkpoint near the border and had to detour" my father said signing papers.
My family was involved in different kinds of businesses, like several banks, hotels and a good number of hospitals. We were the Carlton's.
"Gentlemen, I guess I'll call it a day" and I guess that was my cue to leave. I didn't want to have to do with any of this. I didn't want the corporate world in my hands. I wanted to live a normal life and have a normal family.
Hurrying back, I thought about what business my father invested in this time. But there are a lot more than the regular ones that come often to our home, and others that need "help" from him. Not that I was interested in anyways.
As I entered my room, I stood frozen as I saw Portia cleaning my bed, the duffel bag in her hands. I quickly snatched it from her "Hey! What do you think you're doing?"
"Oh uh, cleaning your room like I normally do?" she said. "Going somewhere? Does your mother know about this?"
I swallowed the lump that built up in my throat. I guess I could trust Portia right? I mean we used to be really close and everything. I know she'd understand why I had to do this.
"You promise not to tell?" I eyed her with all the hope in me.
"Yeah sure? What's keeping you so jumpy?" she asked with curiosity. Shifting to the playmate I used to share secrets with before.
"I'm getting out of this place. I want to know what lies beyond the life I'm living right now. Not just being Macy Carlton; the next heiress of the Carlton's fame and fortune." I said annoying.
"What life would you possibly want? You've got everything any other teenager would ask for?" she said surprisingly.
"That's the point Portia, I don't want everything. I want to work for the things I want, for the things I need."
"But how about your parents?"
"Screw them, they've been up in my ass the whole time." I said despitefully. "I've always been the next successor to them, not their daughter."
"Just be careful alright? Where are you off to?"
"Anywhere but here. I won't stand another night in this place." I've made my decision and I needed an extra hand. "Maybe you could help me?"
"What's in it for me?"
"We'll meet someday and I promise I'll give you the night of your life" I said smiling.
She looked convinced "Promise?" She asks reassuringly.
"Promise."
Night came and I held my breath for the next turn of events. Slamming the door behind me, I changed my clothes into something darker, my favourite color scheme.
"Are you sure about this?"
"I'm sure." I said reassuringly.
"What if they look for you?" She asks in a concerned tone
"Then let them look for me. See if they can catch me." I winked at her playfully
"And your family?"
"I don't have one." I got on my Padigale and revved the engine up. I slung the duffel bag on my back and reached in for one last hug. "Thanks for everything." I said sincerely.
"Be safe."
I nodded and stepped on the throttle. I sped away through the long driveway and felt the cool night breeze that blew my hair back. I made my way out of the mansion and drove past the gates. The road felt so new for the first time. I sped on the highway and thought of all the endless possibilities. I was free.
