Hell, and Heaven is just a concept written in books, but is there Hell in actual life? The answer is unfortunately a yes for Keira and for her Hell is Midnight City, the place where she lived. After a certain time, we also start hating the place where we had all our dark experiences. Same was the case with Keira.
Keira stared at the clock. The time 16:50, and she just wants the clock to run faster.
Sitting in a small stuffy classroom, Keira started thinking about all the misery of her life. What else was she supposed to think about while she sat staring at a piece of paper?
The stuffy small classroom was known as the detention classroom for students, after 15:10, when school ended for the day. But Keira liked to refer to it as the Hell Classroom.
All seats in the classroom were now empty. Besides the one seat that held the bored girl staring at her notebook, she had been commanded by the teacher (Ms S.) to write the school rules, but instead had been doodling silly monsters. (Since she couldn't show she had written the rules like the other detentionees, she had to remain until Ms S shift was up.)
Keira stared out of the window, gazing longingly at the birds, who were flying and chirping. She realised that even the birds had freedom in their life, but she was caged inside this city, inside this room, inside this body.
The sun was shining through the window, and its rays were heating up the classroom. This March's sunny Autumn day was almost as hot as the fiery pits of Hell. And Keira was not allowed to turn on the AC in the classroom. Apparently, being in detention didn't allow her such luxury.
This was her 4th time here this year in hell classroom, only a month and half into the year, and her 4th detention, a new record! By this rate she would soon be in the office having in school suspension - oh goody. Keira thought by the second detention that maybe she should pull her shit together, it wasn't like she did anything majorly wrong, late for class, not going to class, out of bounds, it wasn't like she brought drugs or weapons to school, unless you count the medication her psychiatrist had prescribed.
Some form of antidepressant medication that was supposed to help her depressive state and concentration, it worked a tiny but, but she had no clue as what any of her work meant, so even if it helped, she did not know how to answer questions, which is another reason she ended up in today's detention, failure to do her homework.
In reality, Keira did her homework today, which made her proud of herself. Visual arts, her favourite subject, the only subject she put any effort into.
Although when she returned to the classroom for the second half after the lunch break, when the teacher asked for her homework, her art book was missing, Keira swore she had the book in the first half, but there was no point in trying to plea her case.
Her teacher made her stand up and humiliated her in front of the entire class, saying,
"Keira, all these tactics of yours will not work in my class. You will be sitting in detention today. I'm disappointed in you, you won't go far if you keep this up." Keira felt her face flush, and she wanted to hide and cry.
She knew who did this, and she looked at the group of girls for whom she was just another toy to bully, Ashtana and her gang. Keira guessed they had stolen it during the lunch break or when she left the classroom. They all had big smiles as they looked at her. She felt extreme rage building inside her. She just nodded at the teacher and before she could sit back in her seat, the teacher said.
"You won't be sitting for the rest of this period. Continue standing up. This will be a lesson for you so that you don't repeat the mistake again."
