The Road Ahead
"Ancestors" Chapter Six
** ** ** **
"Come on, we're leaving." Zero said picking up her bag and throwing it over her shoulder, after she killed that man she determined that a house was nearby. So we went in search for it, it laid a couple miles north of where we stayed. It was a nice looking home, older cars parked in the driveway, two small kids playing in the yard.
We walked up to the house, knocked on the door, and asked to speak to the owner. She was a nice old lady, her husband went out into the woods and hadn't returned. "We were walking through your property and found a body," Giles and I described what the man looked like. The lady started crying and pulled us inside, offering us dinner, and new clothes.
The lady kindly took us into town, dropping us off at a plaza. She handed us a handful of cash, which I declined politely. When she pulled away Zero laughed, "Good god, I thought she'd never leave."
Giles frowned at her then nodded his head, when she started walking away we didn't follow. She made it a few feet before stopping and turning around.
"What are you doing? Come on Giles..." He shook his head; a frown appeared up on her face before she looked over at me, "Echo?" I panicked and looked to the ground. Not knowing who to follow anymore. Zero might have gotten us out, but there was a beast inside her that I didn't want to be around.
"Zero... I-" I started to say, but she raised her hand and silenced me.
"No, Echo. You really think he'll protect you?" She said walking back up to me, "You're wrong. See, I know Giles. He won't do shit for you. He's going to break you, and just remember, I warned you." She growled out. Zero turned on her heels and ran away, she's a fast runner, I'll give her that much.
"Echo, I won't leave you." Giles said placing a hand on my shoulder, I shrugged it away.
"I just want to be alone." I said walking away, I heard his footsteps behind me and that made me feel a little better. Knowing that even when I want to be alone he follows after me, wanting to know I'm safe. Maybe that's his way of proving that he won't leave, that he will watch over me. My shoes stuck against the ground when I started walking slower, it seemed like my body grew heavier.
Then, I stood at a standstill. Right in the middle of the sidewalk, people walked past me with phones in there hands, bags from stores and I realized that there are more lives evolving around me than I ever thought. I looked around, picking out the rich from the poor. Placing myself in the shoes of these people.
I might now be like them, but they sure as hell won't ever be like me. I was a monster, a freak. I want to be normal, to be able to go out and shop then call my best friends to tell them what I got in detail.
Someone came up behind me and wrapped their strong arms around my small body, by the way their chest felt I guessed it was Giles. I fell into his embrace without a second thought, he hugged me tighter. Some people stopped and asked if I was okay.
That was nice of them.
Finally Giles led me into a restaurant and ordered two burgers, we sat and waited. I just looked at him, into his deep blue eyes. His jawline, down to the curve of his neck.
"What are you?" I asked tilting my head at him. He lowered his eyes from my gaze and intertwined his fingers together. A few minutes passed between us before he finally spoke.
"I'm an Incubus." He said gently, my mind went to a sudden stop.
An Incubus? No. It's not possible... It can't be.
His blue eyes found mine again and he stared at me, waiting for a reaction. "What family do you come from?" II asked, suddenly intrigued. Incubus' come from specific familys, if he tells me where he came from, I can trace his blood back generations.
Well, with the right books.
"The Wrights." He spoke, a little louder this time. The Wrights, why does that sound so familiar to me?
"The Wrights are a powerful, powerful family of creatures. Born over generation and generation only showing up in the familys most luckiest child. The children of these are said to be leaders, of what, we really don't know. We haven't found out yet."
The phrase kept repeating over and over in my head for a long time before I finally looked down and discovered that my cheeseburger was in front of me, and when I reached down to touch it, it was cold. Giles remained looking at me, his burger was half gone and his drink was completely empty.
As I looked around I found that the place was empty, no people sitting in seats munching of their favorite food, no one sipping their drinks. Hell, no one was even at the counter.
"Now, that you know what I am, I want you to tell me what you are."
"You already know what I am, Giles. Don't play dumb with me." I said standing up, "Why would you let me go this entire time thinking I was alone. You got inside my head, you have been."
"Where do you come from?" He asked still sitting.
I waited for a moment and peeked outside the shut curtains, it was dark, and the moon was a t full peek. "How long did you keep me thinking?"
"About seven hours." He replied like it was nothing.
"Seven hours!" I yelled, suddenly angry. I had never had my own powers used against me before. It made me mad, upset... Pissed.
"Seven hours, you could've went out and killed someone and I wouldn't even know." I was being over dramatic, I know I was. But wouldn't anyone be, the man that they liked just used powers on you for seven hours. Seven. Hours.
"Where do you come from." He asked again, more bluntly this time.
I looked at him through the growing darkness and sighed, "I don't know. My father died when I was young, he never told me."
"And you never wanted to find out?" He asked.
"Of course I do, it's just... I think I'm afraid to. Looking through your generations deciphers who your are and what your destiny will be." I frowned at my own words, knowing that they were in fact, true.
"So?" He asked, sounding genuinely confused.
"Well, what if it says that my family were just Incubus' that did nothing. No great achievements, no awards, no nothing. Your family was everything. They ruled over the Americas when we first came here."
The words he said surprised me. "There's more familys out there than we know Echo. You could be an ancestor of King Mundane. He ruled over the familys before we came to America. You could be related to some powerful, royal family and you wouldn't even know."
I sighed and fell to the floor, landing on my knees. "Echo isn't even my real name, Giles. It's a nickname my father gave me when I was little, I don't know my last name, not even my mothers name anymore. I'm lost..." My voice broke suddenly, realizing something.
"I'll be the end of my family, even if I don't know which one it is."
