Ann asked him to let her be, and asked Bill to always be her friend. He held back the tears that he wanted to cry, shook his head yes then left. Ann just sat there crying, she knew that she had broke Bill's heart. After leaving Ann's he drove down to the lake, he thought that that he might be able to think. As he sat on the rocks near the waters edge, he started to cry. He didn't care if she was having someone else's baby; he wanted to be with her. The fact of Ann telling Bill she couldn't be with him tore him up inside. This is when Bill, started to do one thing he should not have done. Bill started to reflect on how he grew up, and what he had to go threw at home. This got him so distraught he went back to his car, and took a knife out of the glove box. He just stared at the knife, as he walked back to the water. He started to run the blade over the top of his wrist, slowly taking some of the hair off his wrist. As he flipped his arm over, Bill pressed down a little harder. He stopped as he heard a car door; and he tucked the knife under his jacket.
Bill turned around to look at the car, when he did he saw it was a cop car. Bill got a little nervous, he didn't know if they had seen the knife or not. He turned back to look at the water, and stood there hoping they would just leave. The car sat there for about five minutes then it left, he let out a big sigh of relief. Bill pulled the knife back out of his jacket, and just sat there looking at it. With a tear in his eye he just smiled, and let out a little chuckle. He shook his head in amazement, and at what he was about to do. He knew that this was not the way, to solve things in his life. Bill got back into his car, went home, and spent the rest of Christmas brake with his family. Bill called Ann a few times, and went to see her before he went back to base. Ann and Bill talked for most of the day, then they hugged goodbye. Bill decided to drive back to base, and kissed his mother and sister goodbye. He looked at Jim to say goodbye, and Jim had a tear in his eye. Jim reached over hugged Bill, and told him to take care of himself.
As Bill pulled out of the drive, he got to thinking. He felt a sense of loss in his life, but felt good about him self. He knew that this would be a good thing for him, and he knew somewhere there was happiness for him. He knew that the trip would take a day or two, and knew he could do a lot of thinking. That evening Bill stopped at this little diner, out in the middle of no where. As he walked in, he looked around really slow. The place had a warm cozy feeling to it, yet almost like something out of the old west. Bill walked over to a small booth, and looked out the window. He was tired and a little displaced. He didn't really know why, but something told him this trip wouldn't be a good one. When the waitress came to the table, Bill could not help but to stare in awe. She was very attractive, and very polite. She had wavy blond hair, blue eyes, and a smile that lit up the room. Bill gathered himself together, and told her what he would like to eat.
He sat there, and watched as she walked away. Her walk graceful, her shape nice to look at, and her sweet smell lingered behind. Bill shook his head, and smiled he couldn't believe what he was thinking. He could see in his head making love to her, but knew it would never happen. He just chuckled a little, and looked back out the window. The waitress came back with the food, and gave Bill a slight wink. He looked at her for a minute, smiled then asked her name. She said her name was Heather, and she told him she thought he was cute. Bill just said thank you, and told her that she was very pretty. She smiled that beautiful smile, and then walked back to the kitchen. Bill sat their watched cars go bye, and ate his dinner. One car caught his eye; it was dark blue and a little beat up. When it pulled in it went real slow behind his car, and one other car that was there. Bill looked over at the waitress; she looked like she was very nervous.
The driver of the car got out; he looked like he had been drinking. As he walked in, Heather went to the kitchen. The man was a big guy, and a little rugged in the looks. He yelled for Heather, as he stumbled over to the counter. Bill just sat there quite, trying to stay out of it if he could. The man looked over at Bill, and gave a little snarl.
