"And that would be all for today kids, Please do remember that this would make 25% of your finals which might not seem much now but it will sure as heck be later. So don't be late and submit it positively by the next week." Ms. Mira took off her glasses and said, "And Matthew, please meet me in my room after school today."
What could that have been about. I turned back and saw Matt sitting in the corner of the room, as usual, while his friends teased him as they sung in unison "Matthew"."Hey E." I looked back, startled, "You on for the game tonight?"
"Uhm" shit, I completely forgot about the game. With all the college applications and other things on my mind, it has been really hard to concentrate lately.
"Dudeeeeee, don't pull this shit with me. You know how badly we have been playing this season. You know how much the entire team needs this win."
"I do know that and I'm really sorry bro but" Roy cut me off before I could finish,
"There will be no buts dude. You haven't played three games because of your injury and I get it, but now we really really need ths bro."
I have never been good at saying no anyways, so I stuffed my essay back into my bag and looked up, "Yeah, sure bro. I wouldn't leave the team hanging like that."
"My man." He shouted in his frat voice as he walked out of the class room."Great, another thing to add to my never ending list."I thought to myself.
My never ending list. My list. Its funny because if I show other people my list, it wont seem that much. It is not filled with YALE or HARVARD goals, neither with unachievable other goals. Its simple but somehow it is not. It is filled with confusion and overthinking and somehow not thinking about what needs to be thought. Its overwhelming and a lot but I think being in a constant state of denial is better than maybe thinking about it. Its easier that way.
"Mr. Medina, we have talked about this since day one. When your father submitted you into this school, when this school gave you a second chance, you promised to perform your best. Did you not." I overheard as I walked across the hall. The voice was coming from Ms. Mira's room. I peeped in and saw him.
"Yes, maam,"He replied in a monotonic voice.
"and we both know that you can do better, that is, if you focus your mind on what is really important. Can you not."
"Yes, maam."
"So, I want better from you the next time. You hear me?"
"Yes, maam"
"Okay now off you go."I started walking in a random direction aimlessly and anxiously, hoping not to bump into him when,
"So, how much of that did you hear." He looked at me from the top of his eyes and smiled a bit.
"Uh." Why, why do I get so nervous around him. "I'm really sorry. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable or anything."
"Oh no c'mon. This was just a day in my life." He joked about it but I knew he didn't want to.
I hesitated, "If you don't mind me asking." I waited for his approval to continue," What was all that about?"
"I failed." I hate to say it but I expected worse than failing a class after listening to Ms. Mira and her monologue. He continued, "I failed algebra." He laughed a bit again and again, I knew he didn't want to.
"Oh that sucks."
"Tell me about it. I do-"
My phone cut him off. It was Rome with her thousand messages and all in capital letters. I knew it was something important but I really didn't want to leave this conversation, leave him hanging. But, I had to.
"I think I gotta go,"
"Yeah, by all means." He smiled.
"Hey, about algebra. I'm pretty good at it and you live, you know, in front of my house. And Im sorry im not saying that you are bad at it, I mean." My god, I was blabbering "What I meant to say was that, I can help you maybe, sometime. Just, uhm, show up at my place whenever you feel uhm." He smirked.
"Yeah, I might take you up on that."
