Apart from the clicking of heels and the footsteps that followed, no sound could be heard.
"Couldn't you wait before killing them?" Orion exclaimed as they came back to his Court. The blonde was taking off her earrings and the pins holding some hair at the back of her head.
Sombra didn't even glance at him, "Those soldiers knew they weren't coming back. That's what he does, grants them a wish to trade their lives."
"He just wanted to ruffle your feathers," she added, frustrated.
"He surely did get to you." Her nostrils flared.
She turned around; the deadly glare on her face was not directed at the High Lord but at the not-present king. "I got the intel we needed. Watch out for Spring and Autumn. Though, I'm sure Beron can be easily persuaded."
She hurried to her room, where her friend awaited their return. Her friend opened the door after hearing the commotion outside. Laenna, although tired, could see the worried expression on her friend's face, "You're leaving?"
"Hybern made a point at the ball. He knows. I need to check on them." Sombra entered her room and discarded the gown quickly but carefully so as not to insult Laenna.
The mate of the High Lord had never seen Sombra in such a state. She was so alert and distressed, and the need to go to these people was evident in her features and movements.
"When will you be back?"
"I don't know. I can't let him hurt them. I-" Her mind was racing. Her shadows formed odd shapes around her, but they weren't telling her the words she needed to hear. We're fine.
"Breathe, Sombra."
"I'll be back before the baby is born," Sombra said, putting on her leathers. She did not care how Laenna's eyes became as big as the Moon when many of her scars were revealed to her. They might have been almost naked when they had gone into the lake, but the water had hidden many things.
Before Laenna could utter a word, Sombra vanished into the darkness.

As she neared the place, Sombra realised they were okay, as if nothing had happened. There was no sign of Hybern soldiers or them having been there before. The wards were still up, untouched.
A sigh of relief escaped her lips.
"𝓜𝓪𝓷𝓷𝓲𝓪𝓷!" a voice yelled from the distance.
She looked in the direction of the voice and smiled.

A few months later...
Laenna was exhausted, but it had been all worth it.
The smile on her face said so.
"You're so strong, baby mama. You did so well." Sombra looked over her shoulder at the beautiful babe. She had been so uneasy; she didn't use her powers on Laenna this time. She couldn't—wouldn't—lose another friend like this. No other child would be left motherless.
Her shadows were slithering around the mother and newborn child, reporting back to her. Everything seemed normal. No internal bleeding. Thank the Mother.
"Can I give the little one his first gift?"
"The one we talked about?" Nothing was a surprise here. Laenna had broken down in tears when her friend came to her with a proposal. Allow me to repay your favour, Lae. It's an honour.
