They say that your life starts when the change happens. From that moment on, your old life will be forgotten as the pieces fall together in your new one.
The change leaves a person to find their true self, it gives them purpose.
Everyone has their place in the new society that comes with their newfound lifestyle. It brings clarity and a sense of worth.
For some, however, their old lives are not as easily forgotten. Those who are ripped from their lives by traumatic experiences have an especially hard time adjusting.
With flashes, it comes back to them, a reminder of who they once were and how they could never return to such times.
The change makes sure of that.
They were never meant to live normal lives, the gene was always inside them, they just didn't know it.
It isn't like that for everyone, for those who are born into the society it is less of a surprise and more of a moment to look forward to. The moment of pride that follows is celebrated by the whole clan.
For those who did not get the ceremony, they are often quickly tracked down by their scent once the change starts.
A new member is usually quickly found and welcomed to one of the clans.
Scouts or recruiters, as they are often called, roam the forests and cities in hopes of finding new members and guiding them down the right path.
Though little is known about them by the general public, everyone knows that there is more in the woods than simply animals.
Some try to pass them off as myths, but the reality is that they too might someday face these mythical beasts.
And if they are lucky, it will be the merciful ones that they meet.
It is with these mythical beasts and a chance encounter in the woods that our story starts, though it is not a happy one.
