Spencer
I hated balls. I didn't like parties in general, much less the ones they threw to celebrate my birthday. Another year of me not ending up dead.
"Spencer, this is a special occasion." My mother spoke from her seat across from me at the table.
"People turn nineteen every day Mother." I'd already tried to talk them out of it, to get them to cancel the party.
"But this is you son. You're the prince. This day is important. The day you finally come of age to start properly learning how to be king."
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. "Father is years from giving up the throne to me. Why must I learn now? I've been watching how he rules all my life, I know what needs to be done."
"There are things even you do not know son, which you will soon learn. Once you're done please go to Elian to have your fitting done so final adjustments can be made to your suit."
I held back a sigh. "Yes mother." I loved her, I really did but sometimes I wished she'd just listen. I pushed myself away from the table and stood, heading to my room. Elian always met me there, knowing that's what I was more comfortable with.
"Elian?" I closed my door after walking inside, tugging my jacket off.
"Right here." He smiled, blowing a bit of his hair out of his face.
"Hey." I smiled a bit, dragging a hand through my hair.
"Another lecture from your mother?" He asked, grabbing my mostly complete suit jacket for the ball.
"Just a small one this time, but annoying nonetheless." I shook my head.
He slipped the jacket onto my arms, checking for any needed adjustments before speaking. "That makes sense, but hey, remember what Will said he'd do after the ball." He chuckled softly.
Will had said he'd help me sneak out, give me an adventure after everyone had left. And I couldn't wait for it to be honest.
"If it helps, I don't need to make anymore adjustments." He smiled lightly, stepping back.
"Thank you Elian." I nodded to him lightly as he left.
I sat on my bed, looking around my room quietly. I didn't like being prince, I didn't like what was happening in the world around me.
What was the point of being a royal when I couldn't protect those around me?
Those with magic..
I glanced around, getting up and locking my door before sitting back down.
I lifted my hand, pale blue swirls of magic curling around my fingers.
The magic felt frigid, similar to the feeling of ice as I closed my palm, allowing it to curl up my arm.
The power had developed about a year ago, and I'd slowly been teaching myself how to control it, and how to hide it from my parents.
It had long been a law that magic was outlawed, and those discovered with it were to be turned in immediately.
I didn't know if it were true to me as well, since I was the prince.
I wasn't taking chances.
